One of the great things about movies is how they can show us possible gadgets and other forms of technology that make us wish they existed in real life. Over the years, these devices have captivated us on screen, giving us at least a glimpse of the future we look forward to.
The best part is that even though some of these devices don't exist in real life, some people are already working on making them a reality. For example, it will probably take years to build a lightsaber that actually works, but we won't hesitate to buy one when that time comes.

DeLorean (Back to the Future)

(Image credit: Universal)It's not a gimmick, but the working flux capacitor inside this DeLorean is what makes time travel possible (as envisioned by the great Doc Brown). Of course, it's a technical feat, and while the flying version is a fan favorite, we still prefer the first iteration (we'll probably need lightning to use it).
AR Computer (minority report)
This futuristic thriller starring Tom Cruise contains a scene where he navigates a computer that is apparently displayed in AR. Using special gloves as a mouse, he carefully navigates the menu with extreme precision. Similar, less sophisticated technology exists today, but we can't wait to see it in the future when it's perfected.
Neuralyzer (Men in Black)
The perfect tool for a bad date, just kidding. The Neuralyzer is the main device in Men in Black that allows people to forget their most recent memory (depending on how far they want their memory to be erased). It provided a source of laughs in the movie, but it's a trick we'd love to see our hands on.
Iron Man Suit (Iron Man)
Tony Stark's Iron Man suit has become one of the most iconic gadgets in cinema. The multiple iterations of him have various characteristics that only get better with each movie. Similar technology exists in real life as well, but it's still a far cry from the red and gold beauty we've seen on the big screen.
Hoverboard (Back to the Future Part II)
Another Back to the Future tech is making its way to this list. In the sequel, we get a glimpse of the future where kids are ditching skateboards in favor of hoverboards. Made by Mattel (as seen in the movie), it looks a lot like a real skateboard, except for the wheels, and yes, it levitates.
Dream machine (creation)
The dream machine used in Inception doesn't exactly scream high-tech, but it's its function that makes us want to try it out. This dream machine allows everyone to enter a deeper consciousness, induced by the chemicals you inject yourself with. It's really cool and a dangerous tool if there is one.
Transporter (Star Trek)
All that traffic on the highways made us wish the transporter from Star Trek was real. Imagine if you could just jump onto a platform and simply teleport to your chosen destination. Goodbye, jet lag!
Remote control (click)
The movie wasn't the best, but this Adam Sandler movie featured a remote that you can use in real life. Too loud? Just press mute. Haven't you seen what's coming? Just press rewind. It may be a technology that will never happen, but you have to admit that using it in your hands is absolutely fantastic.
Light Cycle (Tron)
One of the highlights of the classic '80s movie and its sequel is that amazing light cycle the characters use when playing in a match. As cool as it sounds, the high speed and light trails it leaves behind can kill you, something that hopefully won't happen when they manage to create one today.
Lightsaber (Star Wars)
The coolest device of all, the lightsaber is the ultimate weapon wielded by the Jedi and Sith in the Star Wars universe. Powered by crystals that emit a powerful beam of energy capable of piercing through anything, it's a device we'd happily buy if it existed in real life; we may first need some training to do it.
