This Steam Deck Dock Was 3D Printed And That Might Make An Official Dock Irrelevant

Instead of Valve not yet having their own base for the Steam Deck, one Redditor 3D printed their own custom base for the system, and it looks like Valve might think of something.

The Reddit user in question, Hannover2k (opens in a new tab), built the dock by converting a Dock-Teck DD0003 USB-C hub. They also added several other ports, including two USB 3.0 slots, an SD/MicroSD slot, HDMI and LAN ports, and a 45W USB C-Charge port.

The level of craftsmanship in this Steam Deck crib is impressive and could lead to more 3D printed docks in the future. Steam has partnered with iFixit to provide official replacement parts for the console, so buyers don't have to go to third-party sources for them, but if you're looking for a Steam Deck, this custom printed dock might at least inspire some. DIY options among Steam Deck owners.

Analysis: Could Third-Party Docks and DIY Steam Deck Make an Official Dock Irrelevant?

With the recent disappointing news of the Steam Deck docking station being delayed indefinitely due to COVID-related manufacturing challenges, it looks like users will have to turn to third-party vendors and, increasingly, themselves to fill the gap. of Steam Deck accessories.

Several third-party docking stations already exist, such as the UGreen USB-C Multiport Adapter or the j5create USB-C Docking Station, as well as many other options on sites like Etsy. Like Hannover2k, however, more and more buyers are succeeding in 3D printing their own springs.

If Valve can't fix its supply chain issues, this emerging DIY and third-party marketplace could seriously slow sales once it releases an official release.

On the other hand, users providing their own docks and mounts could mean Valve won't have to worry about releasing one itself, and could even quietly withdraw plans to produce them. This would have the added benefit of allowing the company to focus on producing the Steam Deck, which is always in high demand.
