Spotify will soon let you download music to your Wear OS smartwatch
Spotify for Wear OS is expected to receive a major update in the coming weeks as it will allow you to download songs and podcasts directly to your smartwatch for the first time. Spotify has just announced the feature, stating that it will arrive in the next few weeks, probably in late August or early September. There's no firm release date for these features, but they should be available if your Wear OS smartwatch is running Wear OS 2 or later. You'll need to update your Spotify app in order to get the feature, and it's also only available to Spotify Premium subscribers. When the feature is available, you can go to what you want to download on the watch and press the "Download to watch" button to put it on your wrist. Spotify has already offered this feature on other smartwatch platforms like the Garmin and Apple Watch, but this is the first time we've seen it included for those using Google's software. Wear OS 2 watches will also receive more updates in the coming weeks. Google has confirmed that a stability update for the Messages app is coming to improve performance and keep messages in sync between your smartwatch and your phone. Google Pay will also receive additional support for other countries where it was not previously available. These are Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Slovakia, Sweden, Taiwan, Ukraine, and the United Arab Emirates.

Review: a new wave for Wear OS?

The Spotify update for Wear OS was announced the same day that Samsung introduced its new Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. Both smartwatches run Wear OS 3 software, though it's Samsung's own version of that software, and it looks like Google's wearable platform is getting a facelift. Wear OS smartwatches have been a quiet sight in recent years, but Samsung's return to the space could reignite interest and encourage app developers to work more on Wear OS-compatible apps. There's no guarantee this will happen, but Samsung's involvement and the new Wear OS 3 update suggest big things are happening for Google's wearable platform and there's no sign of slowing down.
