Sophos and Qualcomm want to protect the next generation of 5G PCs

Sophos has announced that it will provide its Intercept X endpoint protection software for 5G PCs powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon computing platforms. Qualcomm's Snapdragon compute platforms leverage smartphone technology to deliver enhanced performance and efficiency to 4G and 5G-equipped business notebooks. With deep learning artificial intelligence and anti-ransomware capabilities, Sophos Intercept X protects endpoints and advanced computing systems, and the company expects its software for Snapdragon computing platforms to be available in the second half of this year. Sophos CTO Joe Levy explained in a press release how Snapdragon computing platforms offer the performance of a PC as well as the benefits of mobile computing, saying: “An always-on, always-connected interactive computing environment combining smartphone and PC technology offers unique security capabilities and opportunities. Historically, mobile devices have experienced far fewer security incidents than PCs with traditional architectures. This is certainly not because they are not ubiquitous, but rather because of their modern architecture that offers overall predictability on PCs, allowing application vendors to build secure, high-performance software. Snapdragon computing platforms are a huge step forward, providing all the utility and performance of a PC, but with many of the benefits associated with modern mobile computing devices. Security loves predictability, and Sophos is excited to be a part of protecting this next-generation computing platform. "

Sophos Intercept X will also be able to take advantage of Connected Standby for continuous communication with a fleet of Snapdragon-powered PCs. This makes the job of security teams easier as their investigations will not be hampered by outsiders and no data will be lost due to devices going offline. The cybersecurity company's endpoint protection software will even use AI acceleration via Qualcomm AI Engine to build AI-dependent software in real time on devices with optimizations to make them run faster and better. At the same time, Intercept X will be able to exploit the root of trust at the hardware level to verify device integrity and cryptography. Qualcomm Technologies Senior Director of Product Management Migue Nunes praised the company's partnership with Sophos and explained how it will improve security across the board for 5G PCs, saying: “Now, in addition to enabling always-on PC experiences and Always connected, our 5G-enabled Snapdragon compute platforms deliver next-generation security innovation rooted in our advanced 5G connectivity and artificial intelligence capabilities. Working with Sophos, we take device security to a new level by enhancing the protection of your endpoints with accelerated AI threat detection in our solutions. We are excited that Sophos is transforming IT with next-generation enterprise-grade security on Snapdragon 5G computing platforms. "
