NBC Peacock streaming service: launch date, price, shows and news
NBC Peacock is going to be one of the biggest new streaming services of 2020. Far beyond the NBC app now found on smartphones and tablets, Peacock will offer video-on-demand in the same vein as Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. Video, but with a focus on NBC content. What exactly does NBC offer that Netflix doesn't? When it launches on Wednesday, July 15, Peacock will include talk shows like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers that start up to three hours earlier on Peacock than on cable TV, as well as beloved shows like The Office, Parks and Recreation and Battlestar Galactica, and even reboots of BSG, Saved by the Bell, and Punky Brewster. However, how much content you can actually deliver will be determined by how much you're willing to pay and whether you want to view content with ads or opt for an ad-free experience. To that end, expect three pricing tiers (free, €5, and €10 per month) which we'll explain in more detail below. But can NBC's catalog of shows withstand streaming juggernauts like Netflix, Hulu, and streaming newcomer Disney Plus? Here is our best estimate given the information we have.

NBC Peacock release date

Peacock will be available nationwide starting Wednesday, July 15. However, if you are a Comcast Xfinity X1 subscriber or a Comcast Flex subscriber, you will be able to get an overview of the service starting Wednesday, April 15. The service's launch date was officially announced at an event in New York on January 16, 2020, but CNBC had reported rumors of an April launch as early as December 2019.

NBC Peacock Award

NBC plans to launch Peacock with three price points: free, $5 a month, and $10 a month. So why would someone pay for a free service? Peacock Free, the "free" service, will have a limited content library (read: just an episode or two of each new series) and a fraction of the content catalog available at higher tiers. There will also be ads that will play while watching content. In total, NBC says there will be around 7.500 hours of free content at launch. Peacock Premium is the €5 a month plan that unlocks almost everything in the catalog but is always accompanied by ads. If you want to switch to ad-free, this will cost you $10 per month, or be an Xfinity subscriber, in which case you'll only be charged $5 per month for the ad-free premium service. In total, NBC says there will be around 15,000 hours of content to watch on Premium at launch, but we won't know which shows and episodes will be available on each service until closer to launch.

How it will compare to other services

At this point, we know how much the service will cost and what kinds of shows we can watch on it, but we don't know how the app will perform in the wild or how quickly new content will arrive. service. So, unfortunately, it's hard to compare apples to apples with services like Netflix that have been around for years. What we expect, based on what we know, is a service somewhere between Hulu and Disney Plus: there will be a decent-sized catalog of series like Disney, but with a Hulu-like update schedule adding new episodes, series, and movies. weekly. It's also how Peacock is billed, so we're crossing our fingers that's how the service turns out. Because if it doesn't, HBO Max will launch later this year and could completely upset the hierarchy of streaming services.
