Alphabet is said to run its secret division of quantum computing

If there is one industry that could have a disruptive year in XNUMX, it is quantum computing, the next phase of computing power that is theoretically going to take everything to the next level.

This push could be launched sooner than expected, as Alphabet reportedly intends to launch its quantum division, Sandbox @ Alphabet. Business Insider reports that the Secret Division, started by Google co-founder Sergei Brin, will be splitting up and headed by current boss Jack Hidary.

According to the report, Hidary made a case to start a new company, SB Technologies, and there is a site, sandboxquantum.com, although it has very little information at the time of writing.

The precise purpose of the Sandbox spin is still unclear, but it would likely facilitate fundraising and hiring, along with other operating benefits.

Alphabet has so far declined to comment on the report.

Alphabet and Google have been working on quantum computing for years, aiming to compete with Cambridge Quantum, multiple academics, IBM and others for the next wave of computing.

The mechanics are very complex, but in short, quantum computing represents a change of the binary states that define current computer processing. A quantum bit, or qubit, can represent a one and a zero at the same time; Combined, these qubits could perform calculations at exceptional and also unthinkable speeds.

The technology is likely years away from widespread use, but certain companies are starting to bring quantum technology to their service customers. To serve as an example, Quantinuum recently started offering quantum-generated cryptographic keys.
