Surespot Encrypted Mail Review | The comparison

Surespot is a secure email application with end-to-end encryption for each and every image, text, and voicemail message sent throughout a 2-to-one chat. Even Surespot cannot see what you are sending due to the fact that their servers cannot access your private key to decrypt your messages.

Features

Surespot is completely open source, with its code displayed for you to review, and even add it if you want. For those of you who don't code, the fact that Surespot is open source should at least give you some reassurance from the fact that it is very transparent (and there is a simple explanation to understand how it works on the site).

Surespot does what you expect from a mail application. Invite other users to chat with using their username or invitation link, then give them an avatar. Send emoji, text and also images, and you choose to lock the images so that they cannot be saved in the receiver's gallery. Record a voicemail message, then send or cancel it. When receiving voicemail messages, they will be played automatically if the chat tab is open; consequently, keep your headphones on or browse out of the little tab if you don't want others to hear them.

Contact options

The friends and messages options can be accessed by long pressing. However, there is not much. For your contacts, you can do things like close the tab, assign an alias, and remove them from your contacts. There are even fewer messaging options, which we'll cover in the User Experience section.

Identity options

If you go to Settings> Identity Options, you can make certain changes, such as setting a background image, turning confirmation prompts on and off, and generally choosing how your communications work.

Privacy

Surespot is not associated with your email address or phone number; You can't even restore your passcode, so be sure to save it somewhere outside of the device.

You can create multiple identities to use on one device if you want to separate communications. Your identity is also portable and can be safely transferred to other devices.

Due to the high-level encryption and privacy of Surespot, there are guidelines on what can and cannot be accessed if you lose your phone, uninstall the application, or restore a previous backup. When you start, you will be prompted to save your identity in your Documents or Google Drive.

There is a history of a thousand messages and by the time this threshold is reached, your oldest messages will start to be deleted. You can also manually remove messages and block users with whom you no longer want to communicate.

User interface

User Experience

The message options in Surespot are very limited: you can only copy or remove a message, even the ones you send. There is no option to edit a message at the time you have sent it. However, the best thing is that if you delete a message you sent, it will also be deleted from the receiver's history.

While sending multimedia content, you can search for a GIF, upload an image from your device, or take a photo in the application. The in-app camera is as basic as it sounds - you can turn the flash on and off, change the orientation to take a selfie, and snap a snapshot, that's it.

In general, Surespot works as it claims, although it does not seem as fluid or intuitive as other applications. There is also no way to see the gender of the other person in a reply, which certain users may like or not according to their preferences.

Packages and prices

Surespot is totally free, but you can support it with contributions. You should not decide to contribute to register, but it is free on the site if you are interested. There is not even advertising in the application; Aside from accepting cryptocurrency donations, Surespot is not monetized and does not follow you online.

Competition

Surespot's main contenders are other email applications such as Snapchat, WhatsApp, and Voxer, although not each and every one offers exactly the same high level of encryption, security, and transparency as Surespot. In addition to this, it is quite difficult to locate an application that does not have ads that bombard you every few minutes.

Final verdict

Surespot can be used if you want a simpler and safer way to chat with friends or have chats that require a high level of anonymity or security. Push notifications can be turned on or off, allowing you to keep your conversations as noticeable or hidden as you like. And being able to remove your messages from the other person's history is a huge advantage, especially for an application that does not offer disappearing messages as an option. Unfortunately, a major downside to Surespot is the lack of a group text alternative: you are cut off from one-on-one conversations.

The application can be a bit fragile. I had trouble installing it on one of my devices, but the other one worked fine. Capturing and adding images can sometimes be slow or unintuitive. And clicking on the app, while there isn't much to explore, it's not as responsive as you'd like. The design and color scheme also make navigating the app difficult at times.

It is also a blessing and a curse that it is shockingly difficult, if not impossible, to regain your passcode and identity from Surespot. This is what makes it so safe, but from a certain point of view simple to use, it is painful if you lose your information. You must write your password somewhere where you can still access it as a password manager, due to the fact that when you log out of Surespot, you delete the saved access codes.
