Canary may not be a name you know when it comes to home security cameras, but the brand has been in the space since 2013, when it launched a Kickstarter program for its first consumer security camera. So while the Canary can compete with mainstays like the Arlo and Ring in terms of years of experience, how do their home security cameras measure up? First released in 2016 under the name of the Canary All-in-One, but upgraded to the Canary Pro in 2018, it's the top-of-the-line home security camera from the brand. Record Full HD color footage during the day and black-and-white footage at night, through the camera's 147-degree lens. The model builds on the Canary View, the brand's mid-range home security camera, with the addition of a 90dB siren that can be manually activated from the app and three sensors. If the camera detects motion, it sends an alert to your smartphone, encouraging you to log in and view the live feed from the camera. It also stores short video clips of activity, up to 30 seconds long, that can be viewed for the next 24 hours at no additional cost. If you want to watch those video clips longer, you'll need to subscribe to Canary Premium, which costs $8.25/£7.99 per month. You'll also need it if you want to use the camera's built-in microphone to chat with anyone in your field of vision. The camera is compatible with Alexa and Google Assistant, but unfortunately Apple HomeKit is not supported. The Canary Pro is more affordable than the other Arlo Pro and Arlo Ultra models, but it's expensive compared to the rest of the market. That said, if you're looking for a camera that can record detailed images without the need for a docking station, or if you're looking to upgrade from an Arlo Pro 2 or earlier model that doesn't just shoot Full HD video, then it's well worth the investment. .

The Canary Pro is priced at €169 / €159 and is available from the Canary website, as well as Amazon in the US and UK. It is currently not available in Australia. The home security camera will store a day's worth of motion-detected video clips for free, but to extend that storage to 30 days, make sure the video clips are the full length of the incident instead of 30 seconds, and go to the two-way chat feature. that you can chat with anyone in the camera's field of view, you'll need to subscribe to Canary Premium. When it comes to home security cameras, the Canary Pro is quite a bulky device. Available in black or white, the Canary Pro measures 7,6" x 15,2" x 7,6" (W x H x D). A cylindrical device, the Canary Pro is made mostly of matte black plastic, with a glossy black stripe on the front. A disk at the top houses the 147-degree camera lens, which records Full HD footage when motion is detected. Unlike most home security cameras, this device doesn't require a mount, so you can't tilt the camera to make sure your field of view covers the entire area you want. It also cannot be mounted on the wall. On the back there's a micro-USB socket for connecting the supplied power cord, and an Ethernet port for those who want to use a wired internet connection with the security camera, though Wi-Fi is also included. At the bottom is an LED light that glows blue during setup and white when the camera is recording after motion detection or when someone is watching the live feed from the camera. The Canary Pro has a built-in 90dB siren, which can be manually activated from the app, as well as a microphone. However, you can only chat with someone in the camera's field of view if you are a Canary Premium subscriber. The camera setup was relatively straightforward. We downloaded the app and created an account, which in addition to upgrading your subscription can also be done via the Canary website. Our phone was able to find the Canary Pro and connect it to the internet by entering our password. We were impressed that during installation we were asked to choose from several options for how the camera behaves when we are at home and away from the property. Using your phone's location to arm and disarm a security camera is a common feature among these security cameras, but most devices let the user find and configure this option themselves.

In testing, we found footage recorded by the Canary Pro to be clear and detailed, day and night, but note that footage recorded in low light will be black and white. While the 140-degree field of view created a slight fisheye effect in video, we found it didn't affect clarity. Canary Pro has been effective in differentiating movement from humans and other sources, such as animals. Plus, we also don't experience unwanted alerts due to car headlights reflecting off the window, as we've seen with other home security cameras. However, we found that once the camera detected a person, it didn't alert us or store footage if a person reappeared before ten minutes had passed, though it didn't if they did. Also, as we have already mentioned, the two-way talk feature is also only available if you subscribe to Canary Premium. There are a variety of modes that allow you to arm or disarm the camera, and we've found the geo-fence feature that uses your phone's location to arm or disarm the camera depending on when you're home or away from a property efficient. There's also a 90dB siren that can be manually activated from the app, but it won't automatically sound when motion is detected. The temperature and humidity sensors were found to be accurate when the readings were compared to our smart thermostat, and all the data, including information from the additional air quality sensor, is displayed in the app as a graph.

The Canary app has a simple, clean and easy to navigate interface. As soon as the app is launched, a list of all Canary devices in your home is displayed. Tap the View Live button under each one to see the live camera feed, and for the Canary Pro, you can also see the current temperature, humidity, and air quality in the room. The home screen offers quick access to modes that control how the camera behaves when you're home and away from the property, while the Show Timeline section at the bottom lets you view footage recorded by all your Canary cameras in chronological order. Simply touch a video clip to view it in its entirety. Note, however, that if you don't subscribe to Canary Premium, the home security camera will only store a motion video clip every 10 minutes, which may mean you'll have a hard time keeping up with all the movement. a complete picture of what your pet does when you're not around. You want a simplistic home security camera
During setup, Canary Pro makes it easy to adjust how the camera behaves when you're away from the property or at home. This means you can practically forget about the camera. Do you want weather information?
As well as allowing you to check on your home when you're away, the Canary Pro also tracks the temperature, humidity and air quality of the room you're in, making it ideal for those who want a more complete picture of the weather in your home. Do you have other Canary devices?

Don't buy it if...
You don't want to pay a subscription
Canary Pro is an efficient home security camera, but to access all of its features, including two-way chat and the ability to download images, you need to subscribe to Canary Premium.
