'I really don't understand': Netflix cancels Fate: The Winx Saga despite its huge popularity

Netflix has ended the popular teen drama series Fate: The Winx Saga after just two seasons.

The news comes from showrunner Brian Young, who announced the cancellation in an Instagram post (opens in a new tab). "This is not fun news to share," he wrote, "but Netflix decided not to move forward with Fate: The Winx Saga Season 3.

Fate: The Winx Saga, a live-action adaptation of Nickelodeon's animated series Winx Club, debuted on Netflix in January 2021 before returning for a second season in September of this year. Its recent episodes have been watched a total of 49 million hours in its first month of release, making Fate: The Winx Saga the number one show in 76 countries between September and October 2022.

Clearly, though, the series' sheer popularity wasn't enough to convince Netflix executives of its longevity.

"It's especially hard because I know how many of you loved it," Young told fans on Instagram. "It's a heartbreaking silver lining, but a silver lining nonetheless. I'm so proud of everyone who worked on the show and so happy to to have been able to tell the stories we did.

“Our cast and crew have worked hard to create this world and these characters,” added the showrunner. "I'm thankful for each and every one of them, and all of you for watching. It's been an amazing four years. I look forward to seeing each other again in the future."

Frustratingly for fans of Fate: The Winx Saga, season 2 ended with an unresolved grand finale. "Can't end like this," wrote one viewer (opens in new tab) on Twitter, while another (opens in new tab) complained: "Hey Netflix can you at least END the show before you cancel it Seriously, this is getting annoying.

HOW can Netflix cancel an unprecedented show with SO much potential? I really do not understand. Destiny: The Winx Saga deserves better. explain. @netflixNovember 1, 2022

The same old Netflix?

Netflix's list of canceled shows has slowed in recent months, though several series have ended up on the chopping block despite the streamer's resurgence in subscriber fortunes. Bad Crimes, for example, a procedural comedy in development starring Nicole Byer and Lauren Lapkus, was recently canceled before seeing the light of day.

Overall, though, the future looks bright for Netflix movies and TV shows, at least brighter than it seemed at the start of 2022. The company's finances are said to be in good shape, good health at end of the year and its operating profit. seems fixed. to increase further in 2023 and beyond.

Not only is Netflix stepping up its crackdown on account swapping in a bid to boost revenue, but the streamer is also preparing to launch a cheaper, ad-supported subscription tier to ease subscribers' wallets and their own. results.

Clearly, Netflix's business shakeup seems to have come too late for Fate: The Winx Saga, but hopefully more of Netflix's top shows will be safe from cancellation following the company's change in strategy.
