Why are Netflix's Marvel shows not available in 4K on Disney Plus?

Disney has revealed why Netflix Marvel shows launched without 4K and Dolby Atmos support on Disney Plus.

With the migration of the Marvel TV series from Netflix to Disney Plus on March 6, fans have been eagerly awaiting to stream Daredevil, Jessica Jones and company in the best picture and sound quality possible. However, many were disappointed when they opened the Disney streaming platform and found that the previous XNUMX Netflix shows are only available in HD with Dolby fifty-one audio support.

Frustrated by the resolution, enthusiasts took to social media, including Reddit and Twitter, to express their discontent. Since most Marvel movies are available to stream in IMAX Enhanced mode, and MCU shows, including Loki, can be viewed in 4K, this seems like a disregard on Disney's part.

We reached out to Disney directly to find out why Netflix Marvel shows weren't released with 4K and Dolby Atmos support. And while Disney declined to provide an official statement, the world-renowned entertainment company told TechRadar that there's an essential reason all 6 series aren't yet available in UHD.

In order to bring the shows to Disney Plus as soon as possible, the resolution was made to add Netflix's Defenders-Verse, now known as The Defenders Saga, to the streaming service with only HD/SDR support.

Disney added that it would soon introduce full UHD/4K and Dolby Atmos support, but declined to offer a specific release date for those features. This appears to be the company's official hotline on the subject as well, with the Disney Plus Help Twitter account offering a similar response to questions from online enthusiasts:

Hi Ryan! In an effort to make this long-awaited content available to Disney+ subscribers as soon as possible, we've decided to release it in HD/SDR to start with, with UHD versions coming soon. Stay tuned!March 16, 2022

Analysis: When will Netflix's Marvel shows get 4K support on Disney Plus?

It's unclear when Netflix Marvel shows will finally get 4K and Dolby Atmos support, but we don't think it's a long wait. Such quirks are already available in many Disney Plus Originals, including The Mandalorian and Hawkeye. And we'd be surprised if upcoming shows like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Moon Knight didn't get exactly the same support.

It will be interesting to see if other non-Marvel Studios productions will continue as well. Currently, movies featuring Marvel characters like Deadpool and Wolverine, who are not yet part of the MCU, are not yet available to stream on Disney Plus. However, since Disney once again has the rights to these characters after its acquisition of 21st Century Fox in March XNUMX, non-MCU movies, including the X-Men movies, should head to Disney Plus. on time.

If it is this way, we're going to be curious if Deadpool 1 and 4, like Fox's X-Men movies, are available in 4k/UHD by the time they hit Disney's streaming service. If they are compatible from the start, Disney's resolution to release Netflix Marvel shows without XNUMXK support and Dolby Atmos is going to be even more puzzling.
