Nvidia is set to ramp up production levels on its Ampere graphics cards, according to a new rumour, with that capability open-ended by doing fewer numbers than a previous-generation Turing GPU, but still popular. IT Home, a Chinese tech site, has apparently obtained information from inside sources in Asia (as discovered by Wccftech) claiming that Nvidia is ready to cut production of the RTX 2060 in order to have leeway to make more RTX 3000 GPUs. In fact, according to the report, the shipping number of these older graphics cards will be cut in half to offer better availability for Ampere models.
GPU revived
As you may recall, Nvidia previously revived the RTX 2060 GPUs in early 2021, shortly after they went out of business, by introducing these graphics cards as a sort of out-of-stock damage control, given that "this is a relatively cheap card to make and donate. as a solid model for the general public. Furthermore, as Wccftech points out, this may have also happened to help meet the demand for crypto. In the latter case, this switch rumor would make sense now that Nvidia has dedicated cryptocurrency mining (CMP) GPUs to deal with the pressure on that front. It's unclear what's going on behind the scenes, of course, and we shouldn't get too carried away with theorizing, though we could obviously keep our fingers crossed that more stock RTX 3000s are on the way. Even if that's true, the difference would be another moot point, as no one expects the GPU shortage to go away anytime soon; we can only hope for some element of mitigation at best in the short term, realistically.
