Nvidia GeForce Now limits frame rate in certain games for Priority members

Nvidia's GeForce Now service is in the limelight due to streaming quality and frame rate limitations for some games, namely more intensive games like Cyberpunk 2077, which are capped at less than 60 fps (frames per second) with your standard priority subscription.

As you may know, 60fps is the advertised number for this shot's performance, but there is no way Cyberpunk 2077 will perform at that level as it is actually capped at 45fps.

Nvidia has a list of capped titles as highlighted by Google 9 to 5 and on Reddit (via The Verge), with Team Green explaining why this is so and which games have frame rate restrictions set below the level. 60 fps, in a document support.

Nvidia explains in this document: “For our priority members, the maximum number of rendered frames per second is generally set to 60, or more, for most of the 1,100+ games we've included so far.

“There are some exceptions that we have determined do not perform well enough at 60 FPS on the GPUs used by Priority members. So the default OPS for these specific graphics-intensive games cannot be overridden. This helps ensure that all Priority members provide a consistent, high-quality experience. However, we continue to stream these games at 60 FPS.

The graphically demanding games in question and their respective limitations are as follows:

As you can see, Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin's Creed Odyssey are the most successful games with the lowest limit of 45 fps. Most of the other titles on the list are set to 50fps, and note that there are reports of Guardians of the Galaxy being locked to 50fps as well, though Nvidia isn't listing it here.

Nvidia further notes that these OPS or optimal playback settings are constantly evaluated and therefore may change over time to ensure the best gaming experience (maybe for the better, then, or maybe the other way around).

Interestingly, Nvidia confirmed to The Verge that there is no limit on its new top-tier GeForce Now RTX 3080 (120fps) subscription, stating that: previous generation server. While we do not anticipate the need to do this in the future, it is impossible to anticipate requests for new games and the impact they could have on server hardware.

Analysis: understandable anger at lack of clarity

This little episode caused some ire among existing GeForce Now subscribers, as you can imagine. While it's interesting to note right away that 45fps is far from unplayable, it's pretty smooth, but you won't want to go under it, and it does indeed appear to be the benchmark base for Nvidia's OPS lenses. So you won't experience a choppy gaming session, well hopefully, but that depends on your internet connection, of course.

At a fundamental level, GeForce Now is about shifting the demands of the device to the Internet connection, and therefore the correct assumption is that if you have a fast enough connection, you will be able to take full advantage of "1080p at 60 fps . » Promise made to Priority members.

The fact that it turns out there was an invisible asterisk in this 60fps performance, and that some of the more demanding titles have a slightly lower limit, is what causes the tingling among Nvidia's streaming subscribers. It is understandable that these people think that Team Green should have clarified this warning.

It is also a disappointment that there is no mechanism for gamers to choose to lower the graphics settings in these titles to enable 60 fps and accept a visually poorer experience for smoother gameplay.

However, in all likelihood, Nvidia wants its streaming service to remain as user-friendly and simple to run as possible. Additionally, there can also be more CPU-related performance issues on Nvidia servers with certain titles, as gamers on Reddit have theorized in the past (meaning even tweaking settings can have limited impact).

The fact that Nvidia just introduced the new RTX 3080 tier also sparked some cynicism that the cheapest subscription was more limited, because as we saw earlier, Nvidia made it clear that the new flagship plan is limitless. So this is seen by some as a possible arm twist scenario for players to board the most expensive plane, although the truth is that the cap has apparently been in place for quite some time, long before the arrival of the level. RTX 3080..

As longtime GeForce Now subscribers have claimed, let's go back a year and Cyberpunk 2077 ran pretty close to 60fps total, if not directly, but everything changed late last year.
