NordVPN has started rolling out a new technology called NordLynx, which is based on the WireGuard protocol, which will significantly improve VPN speeds for its users. WireGuard is considered "the future industry standard" and according to the company's tests, NordLynx's speed exceeds other major VPN protocols. NordLynx will be available to all NordVPN users because the company has added support for its Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and Linux clients. To determine the speed of NordLynx, NordVPN took an academic approach using statistical methods and conducted 256,886 speed tests. These tests revealed that when a user connects to a nearby VPN server and downloads content from a content delivery network (CDN) within a few thousand kilometers, they can expect download and download speeds up to twice as high.

The WireGuard protocol uses advanced cryptography and is the result of a long and thorough academic process. The new protocol is faster than existing VPN protocols like OpenVPN and IPSec, but it is often criticized for its ability to guarantee user privacy, which is why NordVPN has developed its new NordLynx technology. NordLynx combines the fast speeds of WireGuard with NordVPN's custom Dual Network Address Translation (NAT) system to help protect user privacy. The company's dual NAT system allows you to establish a secure VPN connection without having to store identifiable data on a server. Dynamic local IP addresses remain assigned only when the session is active and user authentication is performed using a secure external database. NordVPN's digital privacy expert, Daniel Markuson, explained the work that went into implementing WireGuard across all of their apps, saying, “We are proud that NordVPN is the first VPN provider to implement WireGuard® on such a scale. For over a year, we worked to make NordLynx accessible to everyone, spending hundreds of hours refining it and solving complex roadblocks while preparing the infrastructure to scale it up. We now have the fastest VPN protocol out there today. It has an elegant cryptographic design and offers unprecedented speed. " To switch to using NordLynx, NordVPN users need to update their apps to the latest version where the NordLynx protocol can be manually chosen in the settings menu.
