Netflix Gets Spin-off of Tim Burton's Addams Family

Netflix might have something for Addams Family fans on Wednesday, a new spinoff series coming to the streaming platform centering on the family's creepy and wacky teenage daughter. Netflix has hired Tim Burton as director and executive producer and will be joined by showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar, perhaps best known for shows like Smallville and Into the Badlands. No casting has been announced for Wednesday yet, and we likely won't see the show until 2022. What we do know is that Wednesday appears to be a darker version of typical Addams Family fare, which is becoming kind of a trend. with the series supported by Netflix.

Mysterious and scary

Wednesday is billed as a mystery-focused series with plenty of main and subplots spread out. As a student at Nevermore Academy, Wednesday will have to juggle a strange new social life with real and life-threatening mysteries, as a murderous frenzy sweeps through the city. Meanwhile, Wednesday herself will accept her evolving psychic abilities. It all sounds very Netflix, doesn't it? In recent years, we've seen a number of platform series that put a darker spin on the beloved and light-hearted franchises. Riverdale, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and Fate: The Winx Saga come to mind here. It remains to be seen who will play the iconic Addams Family roles and if we'll get appearances from loyalists like Gomez, Morticia, and Uncle Fester. Still, Wednesday's darker tone should suit Netflix's catalog perfectly and could provide an interesting twist to the Addams Family's usually comedic antics. With Burton in the director's chair, perhaps most famous for Edward Scissorhands, Batman, and Corpse Bride, Netflix subscribers could be in for something dark and unique when the series finally hits the service.
