Netflix canceled Away, the space travel drama starring Hilary Swank. No reason was given for the cancellation, which was posted on the Deadline site: The show appeared to be moderately successful, appearing in Netflix's top 10 and performing in the Nielsen streaming ratings. The series was definitely set up for a season 2, but now it's another Netflix one-off as I'm not okay with this and the company. Netflix seems to be in a bit of a cancellation frenzy this year, with wrestling drama GLOW being canned before its already-ordered final season, and the infamous Teenage Bounty Hunters also receiving success. While it's generally transparent when most TV shows on major channels and networks get cancelled, Netflix doesn't publish performance data for all of its shows, only what it chooses to share. Therefore, it is not clear exactly how some programs actually work and to what extent the international audience plays a role in decision-making. Away is about an astronaut who leaves her family at a difficult time to join a mission to Mars, and the show also focuses on the stories of the other crew members. Hilary Swank is one of the few actresses to win the Oscar for Best Actress twice, so that was a bonus for Netflix.
