Three offers the highest availability of any 5G network in the UK, according to a new report from OpenSignal, but users are likely to continue to enjoy a superior overall mobile experience in the US. All four major operators have direct commercial 5G services, having opened its first masts in 2019. - Three have just launched a new SIM-only rate: 30 GB of data for just € 10 a month In addition to upgrading their radio infrastructure, EE, O2, Three and Vodafone have invested in new core 5G technologies and new spectrum to support their next-generation networks. Coverage is gradually expanding across the UK and while OpenSignal has done research on 5G in the UK before, this is the first time the company has presented 5G-specific awards.
5G speeds in the UK
All of the data used was collected from users with a 5G contract and a compatible smartphone between December and February, and tracked four key metrics: 5G download speeds, 5G download speeds, 5G uptime, and 5G video experience. According to the results, three customers spent the most time connected to a 5G network with 6,5%. This compares favorably with EE's 5,5%, Vodafone's 4,6% and O3,3's 2%. All four operators provided an "excellent" video experience, with EE and O2 performing the best statistically, but EE continued its tradition of offering the best speeds. Its average 5G download speed of 140 Mbps was 8,6% faster than O128,9's 2 Mbps in second and more than a third faster than Vodafone's 103,1 Mbps in fourth. EE also emerged as the top 5G download speed bet at 16,4 Mbps, ahead of Vodafone's 14,7 Mbps, Three's 12,7 Mbps and O10's 2 Mbps. When all network technologies were taken into account, EE's historical advantage in 4G meant that when subscribers were unable to access a 5G network, they had a much better experience than when the same situation occurred on another network. EE offered average download speeds of 65.6 Mbps, which is 48.1% faster than Tres in seconds, while its average download speeds of 11 Mbps were a third faster than the closest challenger, Vodafone. Unsurprisingly, EE also offered the best video experience.
