Linux systems are affected by more ransomware than ever

Targeted ransomware attacks are becoming more common as more businesses adopt Linux systems, according to new research from Trend Micro.

Overall, it says enterprise systems blocked 63 billion threats in the first half of 2022 alone, which, according to Trend Micro, represents a significant 52% increase over the same period in 2021.

In an effort to combat unwanted attacks, companies combine multiple malware tools to ensure they cover all bases, but Trend Micro's concern is that "threat actors can weaponize these flaws faster than attackers can." vendors can release patch updates".

Linux ransomware attacks

According to Trend Micro, the government, manufacturing, and healthcare sectors are the most attractive to cyber attackers.

While large businesses that store large amounts of sensitive information remain a key target for these attacks, small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are under increasing pressure in the quest for better cybersecurity.

Trend Micro cites "Black Basta" as one of the most notable attacks in the first half of 2022, affecting 50 organizations over a two-month period.

Threat actors are also said to abuse cloud tunneling and cloud-based crypto mining services, in addition to exploiting misconfigured environments that have become common in ransomware attacks.

"New and emerging threat groups continue to evolve their business model, targeting their attacks even more precisely," said Jon Clay, vice president of Trend Micro Threat Intelligence.

Clay urged companies to better understand their risks and continue to invest in services like endpoint protection on their "expanding digital attack surface."
