EA Play subscribers have been kicking the ball around in FIFA 22 since September 22 with the subscription's 10-hour early access trial. But FIFA 22 players on Xbox Series S are reporting a number of graphical and technical issues. Voicing their grievances with FIFA 22 via Twitter, the EA forums, and Reddit, players are reporting that the Xbox Series S version of the game is generally more diffuse than the Xbox Series X version due to what players are suggesting is a complete lack of anti-aliasing, blurring the image with jagged edges all over the place, to the point where you can barely read a player's number on the back of his jersey. Xbox Series S players have also suggested that FIFA 22 on Series S be rendered at a low 720p resolution, instead of 1080p like FIFA 21, which likely contributes to making the game so blurry for some users. And apparently, based on player reports, the FIFA 22 menus on the Xbox Series S are limited to 30fps, for some reason, compared to the Xbox Series X which runs the menus at 60fps. Additionally, but with fewer cases, players have also reported constant lag and input lag with the Xbox Series S version of FIFA 22.

(Image credit: Shutterstock / Mohd Syis Zulkipli) The Xbox Series S was created by Microsoft to provide a more affordable option for next-gen Xbox gaming than the Xbox Series X, albeit at the expense of some graphical grunt. The Xbox Series S tends to target 1440p resolutions at 60fps, while the more powerful Xbox Series X targets 4K/60fps. However, since the release of the S-series, next-gen games (especially AAA games) have not achieved Microsoft's original goal and often come with other compromises like a lack of ray tracing or a more complex implementation. Mediocre, as seen. with RT mode in Resident Evil Village. Most next-gen Xbox Series S games run at 1080p at 60fps. F1 2021 runs at 1080p at 60fps on the S series, while it runs at 4K at 60fps on the X series and PS5. The 120Hz mode available on Xbox Series X and PS5 is also disabled on Series S, however a large number of games hit 120fps on Xbox Series S, higher than on PS5 currently. With FIFA 22 and 21, Xbox Series S owners have reported performance and visual issues with other games like No Man Sky, The Hunt Showdown, Control, and PES 2021. However, it is not known what causes these constant performance and visual issues. with Xbox Series S. Last year, developers at id Software (now owned by Microsoft) shared concerns about the low amount of RAM on the Xbox Series S, saying, "The much smaller amount of memory and much larger memory banks low. Divided with considerably slower speeds being a major problem," lowering resolutions will help marginally, but won't fully counter "gaps." Id Software's sentiments were echoed this year by Remedy's Thomas Puha. Puha said optimizing gaming for the S series doesn't get any easier than simply lowering the resolution and texture quality Metro Exodus developer 4A Games also raised similar concerns about the weaker S series GPU. It's hard to say if these technical limitations are the root cause of the current issues with some Xbox Series S games, but they probably contribute one way or another. But that doesn't discount the fact that the Xbox Series S is still an attractive console at an affordable price, and above all, it's a great console for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. We will continue to monitor the status of FIFA 22 on Xbox Series S and hope that EA rectifies the situation soon, preferably before the game's October 1, 2021 release date.
