Just over four months after the smartphones launched, Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 6 Pro users can watch Netflix in HD and HDR on their device.
Confirmation came on January 27, when Netflix changed its support page to include Google Pixel 6 phones, as well as Google Pixel 5a, as HD and HDR compatible devices (via SlashGear).
The change comes even later for the (*6*) Pixel 5a's, with this smartphone launching six months ago in August 2021. It's not clear why the latest Pixel phones, especially the Pixel 5a, have taken so long to be released. released on the Netflix whitelist, but all issues seem to have been resolved.
Now Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro users can put their OLED screens to good use and enjoy crystal-clear images from the streaming TV service.
This change will not affect entry-level Netflix subscribers as it only includes standard definition content for $9.99 / £5.99 / AU$10.99 per month.
If you want to watch HD content, you must be a standard subscriber (€15,49 / €8,99 / AU$16,99 per month) or have a Premium subscription (€19,99 / €13,99 / €22, 0,99 per month).
Interestingly, while the Premium tier includes access to UHD (or 4K) video, the new whitelisted Pixel phones can't display it in its full resolution.
Despite this, the Pixel 2400's FHD+ (1080 x 6 pixels) and Pixel 3120 Pro's QHD+ (1440 x 6) displays could at least benefit from the clarity provided by a reduced 4K image compared to an enhanced HD image.
