PS Plus Premium free trial lets you play Stray (and more) for free

Tempted by PS Plus Premium but put off by the monthly cost? Now offering a 7-day free trial for new subscribers.

If you're curious about what the newly revamped PS Plus has to offer, you can try it for free now. Sony is currently offering a one-week trial so you don't have to spend $17.99 / $13.49. But keep in mind that you'll only be eligible for the free trial if you're a new PS Plus subscriber who's never paid for the service in the past.

It also extends to the Australian equivalent, PS Plus Deluxe, which usually costs A$21,95. It's not immediately obvious on the Australian PS Plus website, but the fine print on the US site (opens in a new tab) says the trial is for "PlayStation Plus Extra, Deluxe, or Premium" .

The trial version will give you free rein to what is available in PS Plus Premium. The library includes some of the best PS5 games and a great selection of next-gen PS4 titles. Retro fans can also check out the growing collection of PS1, PS2 and PSP games.

And rounding out the collection is a list of PS3 titles, though these can only be played, not downloaded. Unfortunately, the PS3 library is not yet available in Australia. Hopefully the region will get access to these games at a later date.

Better yet, the new PS Plus Premium Free Trial will let you try out the new (and critically acclaimed) Stray at no additional cost. In this creative cyberpunk adventure, you play as a lovable kitty trying his best to survive in a dangerous futuristic city.

If you've been waiting for Stray and haven't tried PS Plus yet, this free trial lets you kill two birds with one... er... cat.

And since the old PS Plus service has moved over to the new one, you will sadly not be eligible for the free trial if you were a PS Plus subscriber before the June renewal.

The new Extra and Premium tiers of PS Plus are still young, having been released last month. It's taken a pretty scattershot approach to the games included in its library, especially with the cloud-based PS3 library of the old PS Now feeling unceremonious.

It's not as well organized as Xbox Game Pass, but we're already seeing top-tier games on the new PS Plus. This month, for example, Final Fantasy 7 Remake (and its Intergrade expansion) and Marvel's Avengers arrive on the service alongside Stray. And for retro fans, games from older generations should be coming to PS Plus at a steady pace.

As a result, the gap between the new PS Plus and the old PS Plus is already widening. And we hope that the service will continue to add value like this for years to come.
