BT 5G launch date is scheduled for Friday

BT Mobile customers will be able to access 5G in 20 UK cities starting Friday, October 11, the company said.

The service works with EE's 5G network, which launched in May in the busiest cities of London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester. Since then, expansion has continued with the addition of transportation hubs, major public places, and new cities.

Subscribers using the 5G service will be able to access average speeds generally between 100 and 150 Mbps compared to 4G.

Rates and fees are yet to be disclosed, but the first customers to benefit from this launch will be those with a converged BT service combining ultra-broadband connectivity and mobile connectivity.

BT replaces its existing "BT Plus" converged rates with a service called "BT Halo" that includes unlimited data and mobile calls, access to 5G and fiber connectivity. BT Halo also includes a visit from a "home tech expert" to help you set up various home connected devices.

"The connected life is getting more and more complicated," said Marc Allera, CEO of BT Consumer, to simplify the connection of various devices, platforms and subscriptions.

BT has assembled a team of 900 such experts with the aim of improving customer service. This has also seen BT take back EE shopping street and the return of all customer services in the UK by the end of the year.

Ultimately, BT will stop selling copper broadband services in areas where it has been deployed at very high speed. Up to 700,000 customers will receive free, automatic updates for the summer of next year.

The company added that it will reveal more details about its full fiber optic deployment and the launch of a new television service in the coming weeks.
