Jack Dorsey announces Bitcoin Trust, with focus on Africa

Twitter and Square CEO Jack Dorsey announced plans to fund large Bitcoin investments in developing countries, “initially focused on teams in Africa and India,” according to a recent Tweet. This is not the first time that Dorsey has shown interest in the African continent. In 2019, Dorsey announced that he planned to move to Africa (without specifying a country on the massive continent) for 3-6 months in 2020. The pandemic ended that dream with Dorsey remaining in the United States. Despite this, it appears that Dorsey's plan to invest in African countries has not wavered. Dorsey and rapper Jay-Z will donate 500 BTC to a donation called the ₿trust to fund Bitcoin development in Africa and India.

It will be established as a blind and irrevocable trust, without any direction from us. We need 3 board members to get started: https://t.co/L4mRBryMJe Feb 12, 2021 "Will be established as a blind and irrevocable trust, without receiving any direction from us," Dorsey said in a Tweet. That is an impressive sum with 500 BTC currently worth around 349 million Rand. Africa and India are interesting options for this new investment. African countries in particular have seen governments defend themselves against cryptocurrencies. Most recently, the Central Bank of Nigeria ordered the closure of all crypto trading accounts. Other African countries, such as South Africa and Zambia, have also been caught up in Bitcoin scams that have turned their governments away from cryptocurrency. India has also had a tumultuous relationship with the government. New legislation continues to threaten to ban cryptocurrency trading, mining, and investing. Globally, however, Bitcoin has seen a massive rally, reaching new heights and further bolstered by support from big names like Tesla and, more recently, Mastercard. It appears that hasn't deterred Dorsey as he moves forward with nominations to the new trust's board. They are looking for three members and have opened applications to all who are interested.
