Hulu and Disney Plus will make movie streaming history in June, and it's about time

Hulu and Disney Plus will be making streaming history later this year, and they have Eva Longoria and a cheesy snack to thank for that.

For the first time, a new film, Flamin' Hot, which serves as Longoria's feature film debut, will premiere simultaneously on Hulu and Disney Plus. The biographical drama will be available to watch for the duo on June 9, with Deadline (opens in a new tab) reporting that it will premiere on Hulu and Disney Plus in the US on the same date. The film will also hit Disney Plus UK on the same day.

Typically, movies that debut on Hulu eventually stream on Disney Plus in the US. The same is true for Disney Plus subscribers in the UK, and viewers also have to wait weeks or even months for them to stream. Hulu-developed TV shows coming to the UK version of Disney's main streamer. However, with Flamin' Hot, audiences on both sides of the pond won't have to wait long for the movie to hit Disney Plus.

The Searchlight Pictures-developed film stars Jess Garcia as Richard Montañez, a Frito-Lay snack-making janitor who broke into the snack food industry by claiming to be the inventor of the brand's Flamin' Hot Cheetos. The chip-based product (i.e. crisps for those of you in the UK) rejuvenated the Cheetos brand in the early 1990s, generating billions of dollars in revenue for Frito-Lay for decades to follow. .

"I'm so excited for the world to see Flamin' Hot on these two streaming platforms, making this universal and inspiring story accessible to an even broader audience," Longoria told reporters at SXSW (per Deadline). "Now everyone can celebrate the joy, power and heart of this film that also uplifts Latinos in front of and behind the camera."

Naturally, we won't know if Flamin' Hot will make it to our Hulu Top Movies and/or our Disney Plus Top Movies list until its release. Still, it's nice that it's available to stream in the US and UK on the same day for once.

The simultaneous release of Flamin' Hot on Hulu and Disney Plus marks a big moment for the Disney-owned platforms.

As I mentioned, there are countless examples of Hulu-developed TV shows and movies debuting on the streamer before making their way to Disney Plus in the US and UK. Some of Hulu's best shows, like Fleishman Is In Trouble, Under the Banner of Heaven, and FX-produced Atlanta, premiered on the service months before they launched on Disney Plus, especially in the UK. For UK viewers, waiting for these TV series (and many more) to premiere on Disney Plus UK has been a constant source of frustration.

The same is true of some Disney-owned movies, especially those made by Disney's subsidiary Searchlight Pictures. Barbarian, Hellraiser, and Fresh debuted on Disney Plus UK weeks after arriving in the US from Hulu, much to the chagrin of UK fans.

Even more frustratingly, some Hulu original shows debuted on Disney Plus UK the same day they began airing in the US. Only Murders in the Building, The Dropout, and Pam and Tommy all launched simultaneously on two major streaming services. of the world. If Disney has a previous way of releasing some of its content on multiple platforms around the world, why can't it do it all the time?

Hopefully, the upcoming release of Flamin' Hot proves to Disney that releasing movies and TV shows on both services simultaneously is now the way to go. However, if this posting strategy doesn't catch on, we'll have this increasingly boring conversation again in the future.
