Hulu brings 4K streaming for some shows and devices

Hulu currently trails rivals like Netflix and iTunes in supporting 4K content, but the service has now enabled 4K streaming for some shows and devices. The 4K streaming content was taken from Hulu last year, though the company didn't really explain why or officially announce the change. Now it's back, but, once again, the news has slipped (it seems to have first manifested itself on Twitter). You can read more details on the official Hulu support page. It's unclear exactly which shows are available in 4K: Hulu says a "select programming list" is available and the list "continues to get longer." What we know for sure is that all Hulu Originals can be watched in 4K.

Compatible devices

You'll also need the right device to take advantage of Hulu's 4K content. At this time, only Apple TV 4K and Chromecast Ultra stream at full resolution. According to Hulu, you'll need a connection speed of about 16 Mbps to get high-quality 4K UHD streams. This compares to 6 Mbps for 1080p streams and 3 Mbps for 720p streams. As usual, the quality will automatically adjust according to your connection speed. Even in its current limited form, with 4K content available, Hulu is catching up with its streaming rivals, and with more services coming out this year, the market is about to get even more competitive. 4K resolutions should be available now. If you're a Hulu subscriber, run The Handmaid's Tale or Catch-22 to see all those extra pixels. Via 9to5Google
