Google launches new attack on polar Android

Google has announced the introduction of new Play Store policies designed to prevent in-app subscription scams on Android. The new policies require app developers to provide clear information about the obligations associated with subscription models and free trials, and provide an easy means by which users can cancel subscriptions. Google is also committed to providing Android users with direct support in the form of notifications when a trial is about to move to a paid subscription or a subscription is about to auto-renew.

Android subscription scams

The latest measures are part of a larger campaign by Google to protect the privacy and security of Android users. The company took the opportunity to remind developers that its new testing process will go into effect in August, which will require developers to get approval from Google before requesting location data from the end user. Other Play Store tweaks are also in the works, which would resolve issues related to deceptive content and apps. The recently announced policies specifically target polar, a form of app that manipulates trial periods and subscription models to defraud victims. This type of app often buries the user in complex terms and conditions, masking unfair subscription commitments. As part of the new requirements, developers must clearly distinguish between features available for free and those available only to paid subscribers. In turn, Google will send a warning to users when a free trial must end or a subscription of more than three months must be renewed. The company will also issue notifications if a user tries to uninstall an app associated with a current subscription. The new measures will take effect on June 16, so users should take extra care when handling Android-integrated subscriptions in the meantime. Via The Verge
