If you haven't played Gears 5 and thought it might be a pretty boring Easter weekend due to the coronavirus lockdown, think again, as the game is free for PC players for a limited time. In fact, Gears 5 is available for free on Steam (or even the Microsoft Store if you prefer), and you can play as much as you want for the next five days, until Sunday, April 12. If you put in a few hours, and let's face it, you probably do, it should give you plenty of time to finish the campaign (which usually takes around 10-20 hours, depending on your playstyle, and how long it takes you to smell the roses, etc. .).
Cooperative capers
Note that Gears 5 also offers a multitude of multiplayer modes, and there's also co-op for those who want some possible (albeit virtual) social interaction over the weekend. As PC Gamer has noted, this limited-time giveaway is part of Microsoft's Microsoft Free Play Days program, which is normally reserved for Game Pass Ultimate (or Xbox Live Gold) subscribers. While this is still the case on Microsoft's console, on the PC side, everyone can enjoy the game from Steam. We were very impressed with Gears 5 in our review, and actually thought it was the best shooter franchise episode ever made, possibly cementing Gears of War as the best shooter on the market, no less.
