Everwild: everything we know so far

Everwild offers a magnificent combination of magic and nature, promising a beautiful world full of wonder.

Rare, the studio behind Sea of Thieves, has unveiled an all-new IP with its own distinctive art style and naturalistic premise. Though we know little about the game so far, the trailers reveal a refreshing focus on magic, fantastic animals, and symbiotic relationships. Players take on the role of Eternals, special individuals connected to the rhythm of the natural world; a bond they cultivate through ritual, exploration, and bonds of camaraderie.

Since Rare is owned by Microsoft, it is likely that we will see the game on Xbox Series X|S and PC. It's also possible that, like Sea of Thieves, we'll see Everwild join the impressive library of Xbox Game Pass titles once it launches. Rare has proven to be more than capable of handling games that emphasize exploration and adventure, and we can't wait to see how Everwild turns out.

Rare has yet to confirm a release date for Everwild, but it is claimed that the developer is now "optimistically" aiming for a 2024 release date after a reboot.

A VGC report (opens in a new tab) states that Everwild has been rebooted with a new creative director and a tentative release window of 2024, with initial game design "started from scratch." But according to Xbox Game Studios boss Matt Booty, speaking to Kinda Funny (opens in a new tab) in October 2021, words like "reset" and "retool" sound "more accurate and a little more extreme" than the reality of the situation. .

However, Everwild now seems to be back on track, with Booty stating during the interview that the Rare team "don't want to keep things hidden for long."

It will be a while before we get our hands on Everwild, though we know the game will be an Xbox exclusive. It's coming to Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC, and it's also available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers from day one.

latest trailer

The second trailer for Rare's Everwild was released during the Xbox Games Showcase in July 2020 and revealed more of the magical world and peculiar creatures of Everwild, also introducing us to "Eternals", the player characters.

While this trailer gives us a deeper look into the world of Everwild and highlights that the game appears to be about humans and nature working together, it didn't shed much light on the actual narrative of the game, or what its gameplay will entail.

It's worth remembering that given the reports of a reboot, it's unclear how much of what's shown here will be in the final game, but it's still an excellent trailer to watch.

Speaking with Kinda Funny (opens in a new tab) in October 2021, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty explained that using words like "reset" and "retool" sounds "more precise and a little more extreme" than the reality of the situation.

“What is Rare famous for? Booty said. "They're known for creating new IPs and creating worlds. I will say that when you look at it from the outside, when you hear words like 'reset' and maybe 'restructure', they're probably a little more precise and a little more extreme than what actually happens when a game comes to life."

"There are days when you're just terrified," Booty added. "'What are they up to? How is this all going to turn out?' Then you balance it out with a day later, that build clicks into place, and you're like, 'this is magic.

forever wild it's probably years away.
Everwild, an Xbox exclusive, is still in the early stages of development and it may be a while before we get a chance to play it. In fact, speaking on a VGC Off the Record podcast (opens in a new tab), industry reporter and GamesIndustry.biz head Chris Dring said the game's release, along with other announced Xbox exclusives, could take many years.

Based on conversations he's had with employees at Xbox Game Studios, Dring said: “The games they announced, Everwild, Perfect Dark, Fable, are a long way off. There may even be a new Xbox (a mid-level upgrade) by the time these games are released.

They're so far off, and it's no wonder Xbox is considering investing and approving some tiny products, since they don't have a lineup of big exclusives at all.
