Vegas Pro 20 received a major free update and adopts one of the best tools in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Two months after its initial release, the video editing software receives a host of new features that aim to "further improve the power, efficiency, and collaboration of your color grading workflow right in the timeline." ", according to Magix, the developer behind Vegas.

Along with the latest color correction tools, there are a handful of subscriber-only features, including smarter integration between Vegas' desktop and mobile video editing apps.

What's new in Vegas Pro 20?

This is the color grading panel where the most noticeable changes occur. Magix has filled the gap with new color correction tools to produce and refine colors. Chief among these is the new color picker for color curves, which simplifies color selection for hue and saturation curve and adjustments.

Designed to give more control over the look of their movies, the tool allows users to "change the saturation of anything from the entire video to a very specific hue in the video, and they can extract the saturation of 'a specific color for turn off the color effect, or increase the saturation to bring out a specific color," Magix said.

In the spirit of giving users more control, the Vegas Video preview window now offers up to 2000x magnification. Ideal, the company said, for adjusting color grading settings.

Online collaboration is also enhanced with the inclusion of a commenting tool. When users share projects via File Drop, users can use the new text field to provide information and feedback.

Artificial intelligence continues its technological conquest, but don't expect Adobe Sensei-level features here. Instead, Vegas Pro features AI-generated thumbnails for shared projects, making it easier to find the right clips and generally improving efficiency and productivity.

And, for subscribers, comes a wealth of video and audio resources, a mobile timeline feature to download media from the phone to the desktop app, and a faster file download service. However, since accessibility is a priority for videographers, it's the Premiere Pro-style text-to-speech tool that stands out. Adobe's video editor handles automatic subtitles perfectly thanks to its AI integration, so we'll be interested to see how well Vegas stacks up as a Premiere Pro alternative in this critical area.
