Netflix cancellation frenzy continues as acclaimed family drama spins

Netflix has canceled Raising Dion after two seasons on the streaming service.

News of the show's cancellation was confirmed last night (April 26) by star Sammi Haney, who revealed on Instagram that the show is no more.

Writing about the cancellation, Haney thanked fans of the show and expressed sadness that it will not be returning for a third season.

She wrote: "Sorry to say Raising Dion is CANCELED. Thank you for all the amazing support we've received from all of our wonderful fans! Season 2 was an equal success to Season 1, even seeing how many people watched all of this and I wanted a season 3!

Raising Dion was adapted from the comic of the same name by Dennis Liu and debuted on Netflix in 2019.

It told the story of Nicole, a widow raising her son, Dion. In addition to dealing with all the normal drama of raising a young child alone, things get complicated when Dion begins to manifest various magical abilities similar to those of a superhero.

Quickly aware that there are people who would exploit her son's abilities, Nicole tries to keep them a secret, but this, as you can imagine, proves very difficult.

The show also starred Ja'Siah Young as Dion, with Haney playing Esperanza Jiménez, her best friend. Jason Ritter, Jazmyn Simon and Rome Flynn were also part of the cast.

Michael B. Jordan, who had a recurring role as Mark, Wainwright's late husband Nicole, was also among the show's executive producers, along with Liu.

Analysis: Why did Élever Dion cancel?

Quite simply, Netflix is tightening its belt.

We already know that the streaming giant has lost 200.000 subscribers since the beginning of 2022, a drop that has reduced the value of the company by $50.000 billion, and that news was quickly followed by the news that Netflix had reassessed many of its products. Developing. projects, and streamer animation projects are particularly affected.

However, critics liked Raising Dion, earning a solid 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, and viewers seemed to like it, too. The show enjoyed a four-week stint in Netflix's global top 10 for English-language series, peaking at number two in its second week.

So either viewership dropped drastically or, perhaps with a third season and the prospect of increased pay for the show's cast, Netflix backed off.

Raising Dion joins Archive 81, The Babysitters' Club and Cowboy Bebop in the Netflix cancellation frenzy. And, given all the recent streamer issues, it's unlikely this will be the final episode...
