Chloe Zhao's award-winning drama Nomadland will finally be released in the UK and Ireland on April 30th. Searchlight Pictures, the film's distributor, made the announcement via a press release and the company's Twitter account. The award-winning film, which has received rave reviews from overseas critics and fans, hits UK and Irish shores next month on Disney Plus. Nomadland will premiere on the general entertainment platform Star, but will also be available to all Disney Plus subscribers at no additional cost. In addition to its release on Disney Plus, Searchlight Pictures has confirmed that Nomadland will receive a theatrical release in the UK and Ireland once theaters are sure to reopen. Cinemas in both countries have been closed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, but it is hoped that cinemas will be able to reopen if vaccine rollouts in the UK and Ireland continue to progress positively. What is Nomadland and why has it created such a stir?

Nomadland stars two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand as Fern, who lives as a modern-day nomad after the economic collapse of the Nevada city she once lived in. The film also stars Oscar nominee David Strathairn, as well as real-life actors Swankie, Bob Wells, and Linda May; the latter trio appeared in Jessica Bruder's novel on which the film is based. The film has won over critics and fans alike since its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2020, with much praise for Zhao's direction, the performances of McDormand and Strathairn, and the cinematography on display. Nomadland has won numerous awards over the last five months. Most recently, it won two Golden Globes - Best Director for Zhao and Best Motion Picture in Drama Categories - and was nominated for 24 gongs at five other award ceremonies. Nomadland is also expected to dominate the 93 Oscar nominations when they are released on March 15. The film has already premiered on Hulu in the United States.
