Nearly five years after its release, updates to Sea of Thieves are coming in droves and fast. With Season 9 on the way in March, it looks like Rare's multiplayer pirate adventure game is ready to fire another barrage full of goodies our way.
Sea of Thieves allows you to pilot and crew your own pirate ship in exciting PvP or PvE battles on the open sea in its open world. It's an enchanting adventure through many of the era's greatest sailing tropes, giving you the chance to search for buried treasure, join interesting factions, and even battle a kraken.

Sea of Thieves: release date and platforms
Sea of Thieves is free for all players who subscribe to Xbox Game Pass or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Otherwise, it can be purchased on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Windows 10, and Steam.
The latest update for Sea of Thieves is the eighth season. Released on November 22, 2022, the new season brings a host of new features, including on-demand PvP combat, new cosmetics, and all-new hideouts to loot and explore.

Sea of Thieves season 9 is on the horizon. It looks like there have been a lot of loot updates, as well as some welcome balance improvements for world events. They also increased the chances of encountering a megladon or the dreaded kraken.
Overall, Season 9 seems to be full of quality-of-life improvements and gameplay changes, all of which will add up to make Sea of Thieves even better.

Sea of Thieves: Event Details
Sea of Thieves Season 8 has been filled with all sorts of events, and we hope Season 9 is no different.
Unfortunately, the most recent event, Sea of Thieves Community Day, is over. On February 11, 2023, players enjoyed a massive in-game Gold, Reputation, and Fame multiplier, correlated to the number of tweets from the community on Twitter.
With the imminent release of Season 9, more events are almost certainly on the way. In the meantime, we encourage all captains to keep an eye on the game's official event hub (opens in a new tab).
Sea of Thieves: Patch Notes
Season 8 is long overdue with Season 9 on the horizon. Rare is gearing up for the next big update. However, Sea of Thieves continues to receive regular updates in the meantime.
Patch 2.7.3 arrived on February 16 and brought matchmaking improvements as well as a set of Halo-inspired cosmetics for the more fashion-conscious pirates out there. The patch also came with a free emote and balances for Ghost Ship battles. Patch download sizes for each platform are available below:

Sea of Thieves: Battle Pass
Sea of Thieves Season Eight Plunder Pass launched alongside the main season on November 22, 2022. Although you must purchase it separately from the Xbox Store (opens in a new tab), there is a small discount for subscribers to Xbox Game Pass. Here is the official description provided by Rare:
