7 new movies and TV shows on Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max and more this weekend
Wondering what's new on Netflix and Co. this weekend? The past week has been quite sporty. We've had rampant rejection of new football (sorry, football) proposals, major accidents in Formula 1 and the collapse of long-standing basketball records, to name just a few incidents that grab the news. Then you'll be relieved to learn that Netflix, HBO Max, and... have decided to leave the sports drama to reality and opt for a decidedly fantastic crop of new movies and TV shows for their respective streaming services. And yes, we are mainly talking about Mortal Kombat. Along with that head-spinning, limb-severing action flick, here's rounding up seven of this weekend's streamer highlights, from magical epics to soothing nature documentaries. We'll also explain how to stream each of them to the US and UK.

Mortal Kombat (HBO Max)

HBO Max, the big movie of the week, is giving its subscribers another new limited-time release at the same time it hits theaters in the United States, following in the footsteps of Godzilla Vs Kong and Wonder Woman 1984. This adaptation of Mortal Kombat fighting games have critics who aren't exactly wowed, but there's plenty of violence and overall goofy vibes that the series is well known for. Check out our features on Mortal Kombat's ending and potential sequels when you're done watching. Unfortunately, we don't know when, or how, you'll be able to see it in the UK. This Netflix TV adaptation of the Grishaverse, a fantastic YA series from author Leigh Bardugo, makes some welcome changes to the source material. A Black Lady Sketch Show (HBO Max)

The acclaimed Emmy-nominated sketch show returns to HBO for another season after a pandemic-induced nearly two-year wait. Critics praised the show's quick banter and the chemistry of the show's cast – the trailer above features plenty of solid laughs and funny skits. It looks like UK viewers will be able to watch it on Sky from April 26, but US viewers will be able to watch it this weekend. Available on HBO Max starting Saturday, airs on HBO Fridays at 11 p.m.

Whale Secrets (Disney Plus)

We spent three years filming this documentary about whales on Disney Plus, which you can now stream on the service. See how the whales behave with the help of gorgeous underwater photography in this four-part series produced by James Cameron; it could make a nice contrast to just using Disney Plus for episodes of The Simpsons or Marvel content.
