5G is finally reaching a tipping point in the world


5G networks are now part of everyday life in most of the world's major countries as the technology continues to spread across the globe.

A Viavi report indicates that 47 of the world's top 70 economies by GDP have active 5G networks in use. This includes 2497 cities around the world with commercial 5G networks spread across 92 countries.

18 countries, including India, Mexico, Angola, Ethiopia and Guatemala, have declared their first 5G deployments in 2022, and 32 countries have already declared their intention to build 5G networks, while another 23 countries are conducting pre-commercial 5G trials. Only 48 countries, mostly small island states, have yet to make their 5G plans public.

In addition, there are already 45 independent 5G networks operating in 45 different countries.

With 503 cities now offering 5G networks, an increase of 69% since May 2022, the United States overtook China to take the top spot among 5G-enabled cities, while China's number held steady at 356 as of June 2021. 5. However, China continues to lead the United States in other crucial statistics, including data speeds, XNUMXG subscribers and base station deployment.

Nearly half (44%) of publicly announced private 5G deployments are in manufacturing, according to the report, followed by logistics, education, transportation, sports, utilities, and mining. This indicates that private 5G deployment is being approached pragmatically, with companies tackling connectivity challenges and the most promising smart applications emerging as private 5G leaders.

“2022 was the graduation year for 5G,” said Sameh Yamany, CTO of VIAVI Solutions.

“It has gone from a developed market phenomenon to a global phenomenon. Technically too, with a near doubling of standalone 5G networks, 5G capabilities have expanded significantly and we can expect more sophisticated network and business capabilities from operators. Next year, the focus will be on network quality and the further development of Open RAN technologies.
