Squid Game season 2 finally confirmed by Netflix, and with a scary new character

To the surprise of no one, Netflix's mega-hit Squid Game has been officially renewed for a second season, with series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk sharing new details on what fans can expect from the return of the series.

Netflix executives and Hwang himself already gave Squid Game season 2 a "green light" earlier this year, but this announcement marks the first official confirmation that new episodes of the unprecedented dystopian drama are on the way.

The streamer revealed the news via social media, posting a thread of tweets that included an ominous teaser and a revealing message from Hwang himself. Check it out below:

In the statement, Hwang confirmed that the characters Seong Gi-hun and Front Man will return in Squid Game Season 2, adding that “the man in the ddakji suit may also return.”

However, while the writer-director had teased the three's participation in various interviews before the show's renewal, Hwang's post also mentioned a new character: Cheol-su.

"You'll also be introduced to Young-hee's boyfriend, Cheol-su," Hwang wrote, referring to the series' now-iconic killer robot doll. Young-hee appeared in the first episode of Squid Game—Red Light, Green Light—as a motion-sensitive animatron who orders the death of any contestant caught moving under her watchful eye. Young-hee was responsible for 255 deaths in the series, making Red Light, Green Light the deadliest game out of Squid Game's nine episodes.

Cheol-su, it seems, is Young-hee's male partner, and we hope he's just as scary. Maybe he'll even sing his own version of the latter's weird "Red Light, Green Light, 1-2-3" jingle...

Either way, it's clear that Squid Game Season 2 will include more of the series' dangerous puzzles, a fact confirmed by creator Hwang in a recent interview with Vanity Fair (opens in a new tab). "Humanity will be tested through these games once again," Hwang said of the series' return in May. "I want to ask the question: 'Is true solidarity between humans possible?'"

As for the story that the new episodes of the Netflix series will tell, the most likely common thread to explore is Gi-hun's quest for revenge against the mysterious organizers of the games. Hwang's latest statement adds fuel to this fire, and the relationship between leader In-ho and his brother Jun-hon is also confirmed to figure in the proceedings.

De cualquier manera, because estaremos esperando algunos años para decubrir el destino de Gi-hun. Vanity Fair reports that Hwang "only has about three pages of ideas he plans to turn into a script" for season 2 at this time, adding that new episodes aren't expected to hit Netflix until late 2023. lo antes possible.

The slow progress is a result of the writer's continued involvement with other projects: Hwang is currently working on a new film, Killing Old People Club, which he says is bound to be "another controversial film."
