Sony WF-1000XM4 wins crown 2021 best true wireless headphones award

Sony WF-1000XM4 wins crown 2021 best true wireless headphones award After months of speculation, the Sony WF-1000XM4 wireless headphones have finally been announced. Successors to the ever-popular Sony WF-1000XM3, the new true wireless earbuds come with a range of quality upgrades, which means we've crowned them the best true wireless earbuds you can buy today, and (spoiler alert) we've awarded them a five stars. in our review. Available to buy now, the Sony WF-1000XM4 costs €279.99 / €250 / €499.95, making them more expensive than their predecessors. This price increase isn't too high in the UK (around €30), but US and Australian customers are looking at a €50 / AU$100 increase.

Excellent upgrades

So what changes can you expect from the new and improved Sony WF-1000XM4? For starters, the charging case is 40% smaller than the one it replaces, while the earbuds are 10% smaller, making them easier to carry and more comfortable to wear. You get a variety of ear tips in the box, which should help you find the secure fit required for excellent sound isolation, as well as help the headphones' noise-cancelling intelligence. Touch controls let you adjust your music playback, call up your device's voice assistant, and switch between active noise canceling modes. The sound, as you would expect from a pair of Sony headphones, is nothing short of exceptional. There's plenty of detail and drive, with well-defined bass frequencies, rich mids, and tightly controlled highs. An equalizer setting is also available (the many presets include a racy titled 'excited'), including space for one or two custom presets, and the ability to turn auto pause and restart on or off.

This means that, with your permission, the WF-1000XM4 can know where you're using geotagging access and apply your preferred level of noise cancellation or ambient sound transmission, depending on where you are. (So at home you might prefer a fully noise-cancelling mode, while at the office you might want voices to come through.) Other features borrowed from the WH-1000XM4 include quick pairing for Android and Windows devices and "talk to chat," which simply requires you to make some noise to pause your music so you can chat briefly without removing your headphones. Compared to its predecessors, there's been a modest improvement in battery life, ranging from eight to 12 from the earbuds themselves (depending on whether active noise cancellation is on or off), plus a few other loads from the sheath. It's not the longest-lasting battery we've ever seen, but any upgrade in this area is always welcome. As for connectivity? This has been superseded by Bluetooth 5.2, which allows for simultaneous streaming to the left and right earphones and (when using Sony's custom LDAC codec) high-resolution wireless audio certification.

Do they live up to expectations?

In short, yes. The Sony WF-1000XM4 has been leaked so many times before its release that some of these new features aren't a surprise, but that doesn't mean we're disappointed in the new wireless headphones. In fact, they offer everything we wanted from a follow-up to the Sony WF-1000XM3: improved sound, some of the best features of its in-ear brethren, improved design, and updated connectivity. With the WF-1000XM4, Sony ticked off everything on our wish list, from DSEE Extreme audio enhancement to IPX4 water resistance (the latter being a pretty big omission from the WF-1000XM3). While other true wireless headphones outperform the Sony WF-1000XM4 in singular areas (noise-canceling, for example), no other model comes close to delivering such excellent quality across the board. That's why the Sony WF-1000XM4 are hands down the best true wireless headphones you can buy today. It should be noted, however, that the older Sony WF-1000XM3 may be even smaller than usual now that it's been counterfeited by a new model, especially with Prime Day 2021 coming up. So if you're looking to save some money Don't cancel the XM3 yet; they're still a great pair of true wireless earphones in their own right.
