Scaling Ethereum beyond the merger: Danksharding

Compared to sidechains, many developers consider Layer 2 rollups to be the safest way for Ethereum to grow. Rollups, like sidechains, relieve Ethereum by executing transactions on a separate blockchain. Transactions are "settled" on the aggregation chain, aggregated, and then "posted" to Ethereum. Unlike sidechains, rollups borrow their security from the Ethereum mainnet: they use sophisticated cryptography and other methods (such as a multi-day dispute period) to allow nodes on the Ethereum mainnet to confirm that sidechains transactions are legitimate.
