Samsung Galaxy S23 closer to launch, with another leaked spec

Before a smartphone can be released into the world, it must be approved by various regulators, and the Samsung Galaxy S23 has just been filed with 3C, China's regulatory agency, revealing another key spec along the way.

This comes from SamMobile (Opens in a new tab) and Ice Universe (Opens in a new tab), both of which are trusted sources when it comes to upcoming Samsung products. The fact that the phone has now appeared on 3C suggests that it's still on track for a release in the not-too-distant future, with February 2023 being the month the phone is most likely to launch.

The only real information we get from this file is that the wired charging speed will remain at 25W, just like the Samsung Galaxy S22. By today's standards, that's not fast at all, with some phones almost five times faster (120W) to recharge the battery.

Slow but safe

This caveat when it comes to charging speeds is something we've noticed on other high-end phones from Samsung as well. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, for example, also reaches a 25W wired charging speed, with 15W wireless charging.

It's perhaps understandable that Samsung is sticking with the 25W wired charging speed for the Galaxy S23, given what happened to some Galaxy Note 7 models that caught fire, though that was in 2016, so it's not that recent.

There is a caveat that this regulatory listing only mentions the standard Samsung Galaxy S23 phone. The other models, Galaxy S23 Plus and Galaxy S23 Ultra, can increase charging speeds.

Analysis: How important is loading speed?

A phone's wired charging speed may not be the most important specification when it comes to choosing a new device, but it does have an effect on how a phone is used. If a device can be fully charged in minutes instead of hours, that means battery life isn't as crucial.

Whether you're rushing out of the house or making a quick stop at the office, knowing that you can restore a significant amount of power to your phone's battery in a short time helps reduce the creeping anxiety that can arise. end the day with a dead phone.

Samsung can at least point to Apple as another company slowing down when it comes to battery charging speeds. The iPhone 14 tops out at 30W when it comes to wired charging, not much above the reported ceiling for the Galaxy S23.

As long as the 2023 phones come with other improvements, Samsung can probably keep the same charging speed in the Galaxy S23 as its predecessors, and it should at least have more powerful internals.
