Rackspace experienced what it called a "security incident" in its hosted Microsoft Exchange platform that forced it to remove the service over the weekend.
The problem was resolved in the early hours of this Monday.
"On Friday, December 2, 2022, we became aware of an issue impacting our Hosted Exchange environment. We proactively shut down and took the Hosted Exchange environment offline while we tried to understand the scope and severity of the impact. After further analysis, Rackspace said the incident was a "significant flaw in our Hosted Exchange environment" but also "isolated to one part of our Hosted Exchange platform." This manifested as "connectivity and connection issues". At first, he didn't know how long it would take to fix the problem, but it turned out that it took most of the weekend. The latest update, posted Monday at 1:28 am EST, indicates that the issue has been partially resolved:
"We have successfully restored email service (opens in a new tab) for thousands of customers in Microsoft 365 and are continuing to make progress restoring email service for each affected customer," the company said.
Rackspace did not specify the cause of the incident, but the time it took to restore services could suggest ransomware. During the outage, the company offered affected customers free access to Microsoft Exchange Plan 1 licenses in Microsoft 365 while it works to resolve the issue.
Some customers were unhappy with the company's handling of the issue, providing very little communication or customer support, and some waited on the phone for hours.
