Nvidia RTX 4090 reservation price surprised us… in a good way

Several Nvidia RTX 4090 graphics cards are now listed for pre-order at a major US retailer, and the good news, well, in a way, is that the prices for the cards are more reasonable than some people expected. and indeed an exceptional MSRP. . in the case of certain third-party models.

Tom's Hardware(Opens in a new tab) highlighted product listings that have grown at Best Buy for the RTX 4090, as pointed out by one of the regular Twitter leakers we hear about, @momomo_us.

These listings include the Gigabyte RTX 4090 WindForce and the MSI RTX 4090 Gaming X Trio, with both graphics cards carrying price tags that are the MSRP: $1,599 in the US of the flagship.

We also get to see Gigabyte's RTX 4090 Gaming OC which is overclocked (which is what OC stands for in the name) and is priced at €1,700 (around $1,550, AU$2,630).

Finally, there's an MSI RTX 4090 Suprim Liquid X priced at €1,750 (around $1,600, AU$2,700), a slimmer card with a fancy cooling system that uses an external 240mm radiator to achieve a slimness of two slots (all mentioned above). models occupy three PCIe slots due to their thickness).

Analysis: Let's hope Lovelace doesn't look like Ampere for MSRPs

These prices are in stark contrast to the launch of current-gen Ampere graphics cards, where Nvidia GPUs were scarred one way or another due to a seriously out-of-control supply and demand situation (and price inflation got even worse). more when the resellers intervened). And of course, Team Green's flagship models are already expensive enough not to command an added premium.

So it's nice to see custom RTX 4090 graphics cards appear at MSRP early on, and the fancier models, which will always cost more, don't have much of an additional claim. There's always the chance that Best Buy's prices will be placeholders, but with launch less than two weeks away (October 12), we think that's probably not the case.

Of course, we think it's good to see that, but really, that's what we expect. You know, graphics cards are priced at the recommended level, or at least some of them. Hopefully Nvidia will be able to push a decent number of chips for the RTX 4090 to avoid any shortages, but since this is really a niche proposition, most people won't spend that much on their PC, let's face it. the demand will not be huge. But if inventory is low, there is still a danger that prices will go up, etc.

The really interesting part will be the launch of the RTX 4080, which will take place in November, and how stock issues and pricing will fall with this slightly more (relatively) affordable GPU, or at least the lower-tier card with 12GB. of VRAM. . Yes, in case you missed it, there are two distinct variants of the RTX 4080, the lesser-spec one that some have originally theorized was meant to be the RTX 4070.
