For now, with all the hassle of where to buy RTX 3070 cards, that might not be a big deal. For most gamers, it all comes down to what they can get, as we saw while speaking to gamers online at Best Buy for the RTX 3080 Ti launch on June 3.
The real problem will be when the semiconductor problem eases, stocks become more readily available, and the prices of these cards stabilize. When this happens, people looking for the best graphics card they can buy may be more picky, or if someone is lucky enough to have the option to buy one or the other, in looking at the RTX 3070 Ti versus the RTX 3070 in terms of the specs, performance and price will really matter.
Nvidia RTX 3070 Ti vs RTX 3070 price
Fortunately, the MSRPs of the new Nvidia Ampere graphics cards haven't been as attractive as their Nvidia Turing predecessors, but they still aren't cheap, especially the RTX 3090, which doesn't even pretend to be affordable. However, as for the RTX 3070 Ti versus the RTX 3070, both cards are still within the budget of most gamers.
The RTX 3070 Ti Founders Edition retails for $599 / €529 / AU$979, with aftermarket cards from MSI, Asus and others selling for more than that. Sure, that's great, but with prices rising exponentially due to the high demand for these cards, you can expect to pay even more for aftermarket cards, assuming you can find them.
The RTX 3070 Ti starts at $100 / €60 / AU$170 more than the RTX 3070, which starts at $499 / €469 / AU$809 for the Founders Edition.
This is not unexpected, as the RTX 3070 Ti has better specs than the RTX 3070, but as we dig into this a bit, the specs aren't much better. As we wrote in our RTX 3070 Ti review, the improved performance of the RTX 3070 Ti doesn't justify the price increase.
If the price of the RTX 3070 Ti drops at some point, or if a future driver update significantly improves its performance, then the RTX 3070 Ti could be competitive here, but as it stands, the RTX 3070 is always the best value for money.

On paper, the RTX 3070 Ti is a step up from the RTX 3070 in a few notable areas:

So how does this compare to the 3070's specs? This is what you are seeing with the RTX 3070:
- CUDA cores: 5 888

- Basic clock: 1,5 GHz
- VRAM: 8 GB of GDDR6 memory
- Memory interface: 256 bits
- Memory clock speed: 1,175 GHz
- TDP: 220W
Comparing these two specs, you can see that while the RTX 3070 Ti has a higher number of CUDA cores, faster clock speeds, and GDDR6X VRAM instead of the RTX 6's GDDR3070, we're not talking about that here. Both the RTX 3070 and RTX 3070 Ti use the GA104 GPU, but the RTX 3070 Ti runs the GA104-400-A1 while the RTX 3070 runs the GA104-300-A1. All it really means is that the RTX 3070 Ti maxes out what this particular chip is capable of in terms of specs, but the RTX 3070 chip still pushes that limit as is.
For example, there are only 256 additional CUDA cores in the RTX 3070 Ti. CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) cores are a fancy way of saying processors that the GPU uses to perform discrete and complex tasks in parallel. The more CUDA cores a GPU has, the faster it can split and conquer a given rendering task in each frame. The faster it can run, the faster you can send those frames to your output, giving you a better frame rate for games and other graphics-intensive tasks.
When you're already working with 5.888 CUDA cores, the extra 256 cores are useful, but that's only a 4.34% increase. So if the CUDA core count translates directly to fps (they don't, but just for the sake of argument), and you get 100fps on an RTX 3070, you'll only get 104fps on an RTX 3070 Ti. Again, this is an improvement, but not a huge one.
There are also other important differences here. The memory clock speed of the RTX 3070 Ti is somewhat faster, which translates to an effective throughput of 912 Gb/s for the RTX 3070 Ti compared to 616 Gb/s for the RTX 3070.. This allows for an effective throughput of 912 Gb/s for the RTX 3070 Ti. Faster graphics processing, but that extra 5 Gbps throughput only takes 256 extra CUDA cores to handle all that extra data.
If the RTX 3070's CUDA cores are already flat out with 616 Gb / s of bandwidth, then those extra 256 cores aren't going to burn the bandwidth on their own. You will have a bottleneck regardless of the added performance. On the other hand, if not all of the CUDA cores are fully connected, this additional bandwidth can theoretically give them more work to do.
One area where you can see a significant jump in performance is with DLSS, as the goal is to render an image at lower resolutions and then oversample it at a much higher resolution. In this case, that extra performance could have a bigger impact on your gaming performance compared to the RTX 3070. But there aren't many games that take advantage of DLSS currently, so it's really a question of how much you plan to use this. feature when it becomes more available in the future.
Nvidia RTX 3070 Ti vs RTX 3070: Which one to buy?
Then, Should you buy the RTX 3070 Ti or the RTX 3070? At launch, that probably won't matter, since both cards are almost impossible to find. Especially since for most gamers, they will be happy to have the opportunity to buy a graphics card.
Once things have settled down and you have a real choice between the two of you, there really is very little reason to go for the RTX 3070 TiUnless you're one of the few looking for a massive boost in gaming performance at modest graphics settings. Otherwise, you just won't see the kind of high-end performance improvement to justify the extra cost.
At this point, you're already halfway to the RTX 3080, so you might as well go for the much more powerful card, where you'll see a big jump in CUDA cores, resulting in better performance at the top end. And since you're looking to upgrade to an Ampere card in the first place, you're probably doing it with 1440p or 4k gaming in mind.
If this is the case, even with the possible performance increase with the DLSS of the RTX 3070 Ti vs RTX 3070 cards, you will get an even greater improvement in the performance of the DLSS with the RTX 3080, making it the best choice. if you are looking for something better than the RTX 3070.
