We thought there might not be a Sony Xperia 5 IV, given that the phone wasn't announced alongside the Sony Xperia 1 IV, but a new leak suggests that Sony's compact flagship line will continue after all.(*5*)

Sumahodigest (Opens in a new tab) detected a post on Weibo (Opens in a new tab) (a Chinese social network) containing a partial list of specifications for the Sony Xperia 5 IV. The presence of such a list of specifications suggests that the phone is still being worked on and the content of the list is promising.(*5*)

Apparently, the Xperia 5 IV has the same cameras as the Sony Xperia 1 IV, namely a 12 MP wide snapper, a 12 MP ultra wide snapper and, perhaps most excitingly, a 12 MP telephoto lens, which can move seamlessly between 85mm and 125mm optical zoom ranges. . This is equivalent to between 3,5x and 5,2x zoom relative to the focal length of the primary lens.(*5*)

On top of that, the Sony Xperia 5 IV is also said to be available in 8GB and 12GB RAM configurations; the latter is 4 GB more than you can get on the Sony Xperia 5 III and is on par with the Xperia 1 IV.(*5*)

The battery could also match that of the Xperia 1 IV at 5000 mAh and apparently supports wireless charging, something the previous model doesn't support.(*5*)

A Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset is also included, as is a 6.1-inch display and a choice of 128GB or 256GB of storage. Interestingly, Android 13 is also mentioned, but there is a question mark next to it, so the source is probably not sure.(*5*)

We'd take all of this with a pinch of salt, especially since the source hasn't disclosed anything in the past, so they don't have a track record yet. Another red flag is that this post has apparently been removed; however, they put out another post saying that the Sony Xperia 5 IV exists, but another Sony phone is likely to be released before it.(*5*)

Review: A long wait for an intriguing smartphone

Assuming this source is correct, that another Sony phone will land before the Xperia 5 IV, that could mean the Xperia 5 IV is quite a long way from launch.(*5*)

The mention that it might be running Android 13 is another sign of that, as that software isn't expected to be available until October. Similarly, in the specs list, they mentioned that the Xperia 5 IV is "near the start of production".(*5*)

All this suggests that we will be waiting for several months. In fact, since the Sony Xperia 5 III only hit US stores in January this year, we might even be expecting early 2023. But that's just speculation.(*5*)

The Sony Xperia 5 IV might be worth the wait, as it appears to have a very similar spec list to the Xperia 1 IV, but considering the above form it will almost certainly cost a bit less. important, because the Xperia 1 IV is prohibitively expensive.(*5*)

If Sony manages to include many of the same creative tools here and in its high-end flagship, the Xperia 5 IV could be its most exciting phone in a long time.(*5*)
