120fps support was exclusive to PC gamers with powerful enough hardware. However, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S owners with a 2.1Hz HDMI 120-compatible display can hit the lofty heights of 4K and 120fps, though it's usually one or the other on consoles. Those with 2.0Hz HDMI 120 displays can also enjoy 120fps, but only at 1080p (and occasionally 1440p).
So which PS5 and Xbox Series X games offer 120fps support? And does the Xbox Series S also benefit from it? PS5 and Xbox Series X|S 120 fps: why is 120 fps better than 60 fps?
Does it really matter to have a higher frame rate? In short, yes, but right now it is a luxury for many. 120 fps support is a huge plus in competitive gaming, where split-second action can make all the difference. Running games at a higher frame rate makes games incredibly smooth in motion, helping to offset motion sickness and making for cleaner overall games.
But it is also a graphically intensive feature, so it is not supported by all games. It just wasn't possible on next-gen consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One families.
While it's always hard to fully showcase the benefits of 120fps without experiencing it for yourself, the video below shows Ori and the Will of the Wisps running at 60fps and 120fps. The difference between the two is stark, though 60fps is still considered the sweet spot for frame rates. Ori seems like it's more jerky at 60fps, while at 120fps it's noticeably smoother in motion.

It's easy to confuse the two, but it's important to know the difference between them. Hertz (Hz) refers to the number of times your screen refreshes per second. Most TVs are limited to 60Hz, but you may have seen some monitors that support 144Hz and even 360Hz. If your TV only has a 60Hz refresh rate, you won't be able to game at 120fps, the updates maximum per second it can achieve is 60. For 120 fps you will need a 120 Hz compatible display.
Frames per second (fps) is the number of individual frames generated by a console or PC. Developers often lock the frame rate to a fixed number: 30, 60, or 120, to provide a stable and consistent experience. If you've ever played a game unlocked at 30 frames per second, it's often extremely annoying, as the game fluctuates wildly between different frame rate values. This leads to an uneven and inconsistent experience.
The main takeaway is this: if a display is capable of 120Hz, you can run games at 120fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, as long as you have an HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 2.1 port. . Again, an HDMI 2.1 or 2.0 connection will affect the resolutions you can run at when you hit 120fps.
