Half-Life 3 teased by Gabe Newell at Valve Index launch party
Gabe Newell has once again teased Half-Life 3, this time at an event celebrating the launch of Valve's Index VR Headset.
We've been waiting a long time for Half-Life 3 (Valve's last game in the series, Half-Life 2: Episode 2, was released in 2007), so any new potential for this long-awaited game is sure to be exciting for anyone craving a conclusion to Gordon Freeman's story.
Newell, Valve co-founder and president, said at the launch: "Milestones aren't really the end of anything, they're really the beginning. So Half-Life drove Half-Life 2, Source drove Source 2, the experiments we ran with Team Fortress 2 were what allowed us to build Dota... So maybe one day the number 2 will lead us to this shiny whole shining on a mountain somewhere... we'll just have to see."
Now, this isn't concrete evidence of Half-Life 3, and Newell is famous for referencing Valve's lost game, but we at TechRadar are still optimistic about the ability to see (and play) Half-Life 3.
Besides, Newell wouldn't be cruel enough to keep raising our expectations and rushing them back up just for a joke... right?
Wireless valve index
During the event, Newell also hinted that the company was looking into ways to create a wireless version of the tube-based headphones.
"We are looking at various methods to create an unrelated valve index," he said. "We have many ideas for revolutionary solutions in terms of display and optics technology, as well as many opportunities for improvement."
Using a product launch to test a potentially improved future version as well as a popular game isn't particularly conventional, but Newell has never been one to care about convention. Hopefully we'll see Half-Life 3 at least one day.
