God of War TV Series Reportedly in Development at Amazon Studios

Amazon and Sony are currently in negotiations to develop a live-action television series based on the epic PlayStation God of War franchise, according to an exclusive report from Deadline.

The God of War TV show is reportedly being developed by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, creators and executive producers of The Expanse, and Rafe Judkins, executive producer and showrunner of The Wheel of Time.

The God of War series is expected to be the latest collaboration between Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions, who are currently working together on HBO's The Last of Us adaptation and Peacock's new Twisted Metal series.

Analysis: What to expect from the God of War TV show

Originally set in ancient Greece, the mythology-based God of War video game series launched for PlayStation 2 in 2005. It followed Kratos, a Spartan warrior seeking bloody revenge after Ares, the Greek god of war, tricked him into killing his own family.

After a string of highly successful games, the series would eventually move away from Greek mythology in 2018, kicking off a new era of the God of War franchise that saw Kratos attempt fatherhood again in a Norse setting, while shifting to Zeus. for Odin in the process.

In the game, Kratos and his young son Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of Kratos' recently deceased wife and Atreus' mother on the highest peak in the Nine Realms.

Although Kratos' story began in ancient Greece, we think Amazon's God of War TV adaptation will likely choose to explore Kratos' time in the Norse wilderness for a number of reasons.

As great as the original games were, Kratos went from a rage-fueled killing machine to a more fully realized character with 2018's God of War, showcasing depths of emotion the original games didn't even attempt to reach.

This is largely due to the dramatically powerful relationship between Kratos and his young son Atreus, which we think would translate nicely into a TV series.

We also believe that a Nordic setting would be more realistic logistically and budgetarily, requiring far fewer resources in terms of set design and visual effects than if the show were set in ancient Greece. Rather, we imagine the series would rather simply visit Kratos' first era through flashbacks.

Of course, this is just speculation on our part at this point. We won't know for sure until Amazon officially announces the series, which we imagine will happen any day now.
