Garmin Fenix 7 update allows you to get the best feature of Forerunner 955

Garmin is rolling out an update that would see the training readiness score from the new Garmin Forerunner 955 coming to the Garmin Fenix 7 and Garmin Epix 2 watches. Other features of the Forerunner 955 and Garmin Edge 1040 bike computers are also coming integrated as part of the update, which brings the best Garmin watches in line with their latest technology.

The update, still in Garmin's Public Alpha software distribution program, began rolling out this week, DC Rainmaker reported.

The Training Readiness Score was one of the most interesting features of the 955. It looks at a number of different factors, including the quality of your sleep, your last workout, and your heart rate variability – a new metric that examines heart rate deviations heart rate when idle - and consolidates it into a single score.

A high score tells you that you're ready for an intense sweat session, while a low score is an indicator that you won't be at your best and should stay light. Other fitness ecosystems have done similar things before, like Fitbit's daily readiness score, but Garmin's excellent track record in monitoring heart rate means it's a work-in-progress feature, and the development team took their time. time to get it right.

The feature was previously exclusive to the Garmin Forerunner 955, but now Fenix 7 and Epix 2 owners will be able to access the feature once their watch firmware is updated.

Other features of the Fenix and Epix watches include the aforementioned Heart Rate Variability, the Edge 1040's new Cycling Capability feature, which can analyze your performance on different types of rides and tell you your strengths and weaknesses. . The Fenix 7 and Epix 2 also get new Race Day features, a stock widget (for the three of you who want to check your mid-term holdings), Virtual Caddy support for golfers, and fixes for a number of issues. existing.

The full list can be found on the Garmin website (opens in a new tab), but a new "What's New" screen can also tell you about changes to your watch. The update, still in beta, began rolling out this week, DC Rainmaker reported.

How can I get the update?

Unlike most updates, you won't get it automatically when you sync with your phone because it's still in Public Alpha: for now, you'll have to go through the trouble of manually uploading the latest update.

Garmin's website has four links to download the software in zip format, each for a different watch: the Epix (Gen 2), the Fenix 7, 7X and 7S (opens in a new tab). Once downloaded, you'll be able to connect your watch to your computer, open the downloaded zip file, and move the software to your watch, just like you do when storing music files.

Garmin's Public Alpha software is buggy and relies on users testing these features and reporting any bugs they find. Guide to reporting a bug can be found here (opens in a new tab). You don't need to sign up for the beta program on Garmin Connect to do this; You can check out our Garmin Connect user guide here, but if you'd rather wait for the software, you can do that and the feature will (eventually) make its way to your watch itself.
