Forza Motorsport: Everything We Know So Far

Forza Motorsport: Everything We Know So Far

Forza Motorsport was first announced in 2020. Since then, Microsoft has been pretty quiet about the upcoming racing sim. Other than a few sneak peeks and a few teasers, we still don't know much.

While there are still plenty of mysteries left, it certainly looks like it will be a technical showcase of what Xbox Series X can really do. We can't wait to see how it stacks up against Gran Turismo 7 on PS5. A big question fans have about Forza Motorsport is whether or not it will be released on next-gen consoles like Xbox One. So far, there has been no confirmation from Turn10, the developer of the game.

What we do know is that there was a playtest where fans were asked what they thought of Forza Motorsport in its current state. Not only that, but Turn10 recently shared a look at the game's "Corner Mastery" system. For now, that's all we know about Forza Motorsport. As Microsoft and Turn10 reveal more, this page will be updated.

Forza Motorsport will arrive in the spring of 2023 (likely between March and June) and will launch on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC.

As the game is targeted at the latest consoles available, we can reasonably expect it to take advantage of some new features such as ray tracing or 120fps mode. Forza Motorsport is rumored to release on Xbox One as well, but that has yet to be confirmed. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one.

However, there are currently some doubts regarding this release window. During September's Forza Monthly (opens in a new tab) stream, General Manager Dan Greenawalt and Creative Director Chris Esaki offered a development update, confirming that polishing won't begin until next year. Greenwalt said:

"The last step, coming in next year, is polishing. And polishing is really essential. If you have a great game like Motorsport and a lot of new systems that you redesign, that's a lot of surface to polish. And that takes a lot of time. True art "The whole point of game development is not biting off more than you can mod. We're in full production now, and we'll move into that polishing phase sometime next year."

Microsoft hasn't confirmed any delays yet, but we'll keep you updated as we get more information.

Forza Motorsport feels like as pure a racing sim as it gets, providing a huge update to what Forza Motorsport 7 offers. For starters, it will be a "big generation leap" from previous games. Chris Esaki, the game's creative director, has shared details on how Forza Motorsport's physics have evolved since Forza Motorsport 7.

"To put the physical work into perspective... the changes we've made from Forza Motorsport 7 to now are more than the changes we've made from 4 to 7. It's basically a huge generational leap in the game."

According to Esaki, the tire collision model has also been revised. From the first game through Forza Motorsport 7, the tires have always had a single point of contact with the track surface, renewing themselves at 60 cycles per second (60 Hz).

In Forza Motorsport, there are now eight points of contact with the track surface and the motor will update at 360 cycles per second (360 Hz). That's a 48-fold increase in fidelity for a single-tire crash. Various tire compounds have also been confirmed, a series for the first time. Hard, medium and soft tire compounds will deepen gameplay and racing strategy, and Esaki said it will lead to "new and exciting gameplay decisions during a race."

Environmental factors will also need to be taken into account in Forza Motorsport and have the potential to make every lap different, according to Esaki.

"We're working on things like track temperature and how it affects things like grip and tire pressure, and tire wear. Also, you can imagine how the weather and climate change, along with the new model of Tire wear and all new compounds lead to a greater driving experience and deeper racing.

Turn 10 has revealed that the Forza Feedback Panel (Opens in a new tab) will allow players to get their hands on the next Forza Motorsport, so the community can shape the game. Signing up is simple: you must be over 18 and agree to a privacy statement, which you can withdraw at any time if you decide to leave the program.

The first playtest took place on May 8, 2021, and resulted in a "tonne of great feedback" from the community. According to creative director Chris Esaki. Esaki said that after the playtest, the team was pretty sure everyone was "super excited and energized" by what was on display. He also explained that the reason only small parts of the game are tested is that Turn 10 receives "critical feedback" in "specific areas."

But if you miss the first playtest, fear not. More playtesting is expected to take place in the future, though we're waiting for an exact date to find out when that will take place.

Forza Motorsport: List of Cars

What kind of cars can we expect to see in Forza Motorsport, and more importantly, what vehicle will be featured on the cover of the game? While it's hard for us to guess the full roster at this point, we at least have an idea of how many cars will be in the game, based on Forza Motorsport 7's total.

Forza Motorsport 7 featured 700 cars and 32 tracks, which is an impressive number. While there's no guarantee that the next game will surpass that number, mainly due to the fact that the cars will likely need to be revamped or upgraded for next-gen systems, we expect Forza Motorsport to come close to that number.

So far, 41 cars have been confirmed in Forza Motorsport, including nine new ones. In fact, user YoungRhombus has maintained an active list on the GT Planet forums (opens in a new tab). Many thanks to them, as we used this list to help build the one below:

As more cars are confirmed they will be added to this section.

Introducing a new "corner mastery system", Turn 10 advised him to focus practice sessions on the trickiest corners on a track.
