Compared to sidechains, Layer 2 rollups are considered by many developers to be the safest way to grow Ethereum. Rollups, like sidechains, relieve Ethereum by executing transactions on a separate blockchain. Transactions are "settled" on the aggregation chain, aggregated, and then "published" to Ethereum. Unlike sidechains, rollups borrow their security from the Ethereum mainnet: they use sophisticated cryptography and other methods (such as a multi-day contention period) to allow nodes on the Ethereum mainnet to confirm that transactions are legitimate.
