The 55-inch LG CX OLED is now even cheaper than the 48-inch, surprisingly

Stop the presses: The 55-inch LG CX OLED has a new, reduced price that makes it even cheaper than the smaller 48-inch model.

Originally priced at £1,799 in the UK, LG’s 4-inch 55K TV is now on offer at a discounted price of just £1,399. That’s £100 cheaper than the more compact 48-inch size, and much cheaper than the corresponding 65- and 77-inch sizes.

The LG CX OLED is widely regarded as one of the best OLED TVs this year, and currently tops our own OLED guide. Featuring a new a9 Gen 3 processor and a gorgeous OLED panel, along with a 2.2 channel speaker system, it offers a great combination of picture and audio quality at a decent mid-range price – the most important thing now.

In our review of the LG CX OLED, we cited the excellent webOS smart TV platform and a noticeable improvement in the power of its brilliant HDR colours over last year’s C9. As an OLED TV, it also benefits from an infinite contrast ratio (for bright whites and deep blacks), as well as excellent colour accuracy.

With Prime Day on the way, along with plenty of Black Friday TV deals in the coming weeks, you can be sure there will be some deep discounts on some OLED TVs. We’d be surprised to see the new-for-2020 LG CX go any lower than that, so we’d say it’s a good decision to grab it now while this current deal lasts. (If it fails, though, you’ll likely see a similar price drop on the CX or something equivalent later in the year.)

When the price is right

Price remains the biggest hurdle to more buyers purchasing the LG CX OLED for their homes, and while we're not yet seeing sets really dip below the €1,000 mark, sets that cost quite a bit more (as with the LG CX at €1399) are gradually getting better for their price.

When LG first announced its first 48-inch OLED TV—the size is currently limited to the LG CX, Sony A9, and Philips OLED+ 935 models—we were disappointed not to see it used to drive down the cost of the LG BX OLED, the TV brand’s cheapest OLED this year. That frustration still exists, but this deal is a great example of the discounts these TVs get on occasion, and why it’s important to keep an eye out when they happen.

We're secretly hoping the BX gets a 48-inch model in the new year, but we're really keeping our fingers crossed for that one. Until now, though, the LG CX has never seemed like such a good buy.
