Microsoft Defender for Endpoint gets mobile integration

Late last week, Microsoft announced that mobile network protection functionality for Android and iOS devices will be integrated into the company's cloud-based security platform, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint (MDE). According to the announcement, the feature will help businesses find weaknesses in their mobile data networks.

The new MDE service will be disabled by default, Microsoft said, saying that once users enable it, it will notify IT security administrators of various Wi-Fi threats and malicious certificates. It is also capable of detecting unwanted hardware such as the Hak5 Wi-Fi Pineapple device, which is often used by threat actors to steal data circulating on the target network.

Additionally, Mobile Network Protection sends a notification if it detects a suspicious or unsafe network, or if it finds a new open Wi-Fi network.

To use the new feature, Android users need to grant MDE location permissions to scan networks and send alert notifications. For iOS devices, this will require embed permissions.

Additionally, administrators can configure the tool on their Android and iOS devices through the Microsoft Endpoint Manager admin center.

Mobile network protection was first announced in June, when the company described these networks as an "increasingly complex and unique pathway" for nefarious activity, if left unaddressed.

"To combat this, Microsoft offers a mobile network protection feature in Defender for Endpoint that helps organizations identify, assess, and remediate endpoint weaknesses using robust threat intelligence," the company said. .

Microsoft has worked hard to develop its malware and endpoint protection solutions. In addition to frequent MDE updates, it also recently announced plans for a new Intune Premium suite next year. This endpoint management plan must include Microsoft Tunnel for mobile app management, remote assistance, and endpoint privilege management, among other advanced endpoint analytics offerings.
