Google wants to build the next generation of web apps now

Google has announced a new fund for advanced web applications, which should include in its scope anything that "enhances the web as a platform for advanced applications."

Google admitted it doesn't have a precise definition of what "advanced apps" are, but said it generally considers them to be websites with an app-like interface and additional functionality important to the client.

The tech giant cited libraries and tools that make it easy to build advanced web apps, such as Bubblewrap enhancements and WebUSB-compatible drivers, as well as demo apps and tutorials showing use cases. Use "unique or powerful" for advanced web applications as examples of what they feel like investing in.

What is eligible for investment?

Google highlighted its earlier investments in the WebAssembly portable binary code format, its introduction of APIs like File System Access and WebTransport, and how those changes have helped bring apps like Photoshop to browsers around the world.

"While the Chrome team has worked hard to create new features, we are only responsible for a small part of the work," a Google spokesperson said. "Web application developers rely on many other members of the community who have built a robust ecosystem of APIs, tools, demo applications, and other materials."

They added: "To help recognize the importance of this work and allow more people to spend time on these projects, we are delighted to announce today the launch of the Advanced Web Applications Fund: a new fund to support the web as a platform for advanced applications. . Applications."
